About the Location
A Glimpse Through Time
Situated in Tacoma sits South Park, a green space with roots stretching back to 1905. The park emerged from land originally purchased by the City of Tacoma Light and Water Company in 1893, carved from the Spanaway Lake and Flume Line right-of-way.
In those early days, dedicated workers transformed the raw land - clearing trails, planting trees and shrubs, and creating inviting spaces with flower beds and benches. 1910 saw the addition of a tennis court, along with irrigation systems and an impressive display of over 2,100 plants brightening the landscape.
By 1915, South Park was a popular spot for locals, who came for picnics and gatherings. There is a certain historical richness here, heightened by the park's location near some of Tacoma's oldest cemeteries, with a paved trail winding between houses and cemetery grounds for several blocks.
Today's Park Experience
South Park has evolved over time. In 2015, the old wading pool was replaced with a modern sprayground - popular with families during warm Washington days.
You'll discover a playground with jungle gym equipment (though it's showing its age a bit), and a basketball court that draws teens and adults looking for a pickup game. The open grassy areas offer plenty of space to toss a frisbee, kick a ball around, or just sprawl out with a good book.
If you're planning a small gathering, the picnic area features several tables thoughtfully spaced within the grounds - excellent for intimate family reunions or casual meetups with friends.
Natural Charm
The magnificent shade trees are particularly nice, offering cool respite when the sun beats down. Paved trails weave through natural areas, inviting leisurely walks or bike rides for visitors young and old.
The park's undulating landscape, with its gentle hills and varied terrain, creates natural playgrounds that children love exploring. Seasonal flowers and mature trees add texture and color, creating spaces that work equally well for active play or finding a quiet moment to yourself.
Getting Around
South Park offers wheelchair access from the street, with pathways leading to various attractions including the sprayground. There's a sizable parking lot, although it tends to fill quickly on nice days - you might want to arrive early if visiting during peak times.
The restroom facilities received an upgrade in 2015, but note that they typically close during winter months (usually from October onward).
Cultural Heart
South Park has a connection to the Asian Pacific Cultural Center (APCC). For more than ten years, the park's former community center was operated by APCC.
Excitingly, APCC is now building a new facility at this location, which promises to enrich the park's cultural significance and community resources. The park continues to host various community events throughout the year, including festivals that celebrate the diverse heritage of Tacoma's residents.
