About the Location

Lakeside Sanctuary

Found in Tacoma, Washington, Wapato Park is an 80-acre glimpse of nature that feels worlds away from city life. At its heart lies Wapato Lake, a 35-acre freshwater space where wildlife thrives and visitors can enjoy a peaceful afternoon of fishing or paddling around in non-motorized boats.

The 0.9-mile paved trail that hugs the lake's perimeter is ideal for those morning jogs, afternoon strolls, or walking your four-legged friend. It's just long enough to get your steps in while soaking up the serene views and spotting local wildlife along the way.

Rich History

This green space has quite a story to tell. Back in 1919, the land was bought as a potential reservoir site, but it really came into its own during the late 1930s as part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project - one of many public works initiatives that helped shape America's parks during the Great Depression.

The name "Wapato" comes from a wild plant (sagittaria latifolia) that once flourished around the lake's edges. With a history stretching back roughly 15,000 years, you're walking on ground that has significance both naturally and culturally.

Recreational Features

Whether you're looking to relax or play, Wapato Park offers various options. Kids can burn energy at multiple playgrounds designed for different age groups, while picnic areas with tables and benches provide comfortable lunch spots. The historic pergola adds a touch of old-world charm to your park visit.

If you're visiting with kids during warmer months, the Skip and Laura Vaughn playground and sprayground (added in 2002) offers a nice spot for cooling off. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the dock extending into the lake, which gets stocked with trout periodically all year long.

Wildlife and Natural Features

The lake is a hotspot for waterfowl - ducks and geese are regular residents, making it an ideal place for casual bird watching. If you visit in spring or summer, you might be lucky enough to spot adorable ducklings paddling after their mothers. The lake's edge, dotted with lily pads, adds to the postcard-perfect scenery.

Beyond the main trail, you'll come across wetland areas connected by elevated boardwalks that let you explore the more secluded corners of the park. These wooden bridges offer unique perspectives of the diverse ecosystem that calls Wapato home.

Dog-Friendly Areas

Your canine companions will thank you for a trip to Wapato Park. The dedicated off-leash area is divided into three sections: one for large dogs, another for smaller pups, and an upper section connected to the large dog area with winding trails through wooded terrain - a great space for dogs in the middle of Tacoma.

You're welcome to bring leashed dogs throughout the rest of the park, just remember to keep them on their leash outside of the designated off-leash zones.

Recent Improvements

Wapato Park keeps getting better with age. Recent years have seen trail renovations, new boardwalks that help protect the delicate wetland areas, and additional pathways that make the park more accessible to everyone.

Metro Parks Tacoma maintains the grounds with support from community volunteers like the Friends of Wapato Hills Park. Their combined efforts ensure that this urban oasis stays clean and well-maintained throughout the seasons, ready for whatever adventure you have in mind.
