About the Location
Historic Origins
Found in Tacoma, Washington, you'll find Washington Park - a 27-acre green oasis managed by Metro Parks Tacoma. Back in 1886, Charles B. Wright (who headed the Tacoma Land Company) made quite the generous move by donating 20 acres to the city as a public space for everyone to enjoy.
The park has grown a bit since then, reaching its current size through additional acquisitions. It's not just a pretty place to visit; Washington Park has actually played a key role in shaping Tacoma's development, with homes and institutions sprouting up around it over the decades.
Arboretum Collection
Tree lovers, rejoice! Washington Park doubles as an arboretum, home to over 700 mature trees spanning roughly 100 native and exotic species. If you're curious about different types of trees but don't want to venture into the wilderness, this urban tree collection offers an excellent opportunity to expand your botanical knowledge while staying firmly within city limits.
Rose Garden
Perhaps one of the park's most charming features is its rose garden - a fragrant, colorful corner that transforms the landscape when in bloom. The garden showcases a variety of roses in different hues and types, creating a little pocket of floral beauty.
When the roses are showing off at their peak, the display is truly something special - vibrant colors catch your eye while sweet scents follow you along the pathways. It's no wonder this spot draws both dedicated plant enthusiasts and those simply looking for a moment of peace amid their busy day.
Artistic Elements
As you wander through Washington Park, you'll encounter some interesting artistic touches that add character to the grounds. There's a bust of playwright Henrik Ibsen standing proudly among the greenery, and if you explore further, you'll discover the Greek maidens sculptures - affectionately nicknamed "Annie" and "Fannie" by locals. These artworks bring a touch of culture and history to your park experience.
Botanical Conservatory
The crown jewel of Washington Park has to be the W. W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory. This Victorian-style glass structure dates back to 1907 and houses an impressive collection of over 550 plant species. From delicate orchids to towering palms, lush ferns to rotating seasonal displays, the conservatory is a plant paradise.
Designed by Isaac J. Knapp, the building itself is architectural eye candy with its twelve-sided central dome and elegant glass-paned wings. The conservatory has become a home for plants and helped establish the surrounding neighborhood as one of Tacoma's most pleasant and sought-after areas.
