About the Location
Riverside Retreat
Tucked away just a short drive from downtown Vancouver, this 120-acre gem sits peacefully along the Columbia River, about 2 miles west of Vancouver Lake Park. Since its dedication in 1997, Frenchman's Bar has been offering that perfect blend of rural tranquility without the long commute from the city.
On those crystal-clear Pacific Northwest days, you'll be treated to stunning views of Mount Hood, Mount Adams, and Mount St. Helens standing majestically in the distance. Face west across to Oregon's Sauvie Island and you're in prime position for some truly breathtaking sunsets over the Columbia River.
Beach Vibes
There's a wide, sandy beach that stretches along the Columbia shoreline - great for dipping your toes in on a hot summer day or simply soaking in the river views. While mostly soft sand, you might encounter a few rocky patches here and there.
This shoreline is a favorite spot for spreading out a beach towel, helping the kids build epic sandcastles, or cooling off when the temperature climbs. Just note that river currents can be tricky - wearing life jackets when swimming is definitely the smart move.
Connected by Nature
Feel like stretching your legs? A 2.5-mile paved shared-use path connects Frenchman's Bar to Vancouver Lake Park. At 12 feet wide, there's plenty of room for walking, jogging, biking or even horseback riding.
The trail hugs the Columbia River, offering beautiful water views and landscape panoramas along the way. The smooth, well-maintained surface makes it accessible for everyone - wheelchairs and strollers included.
Picnic Paradise
Sprawling grassy areas provide a great backdrop for family picnics and casual games of frisbee or catch. You'll find picnic tables, barbecue pits, and covered picnic shelters scattered throughout the grounds.
At the end of the parking area is a large pavilion with tables, electrical outlets, and sinks - convenient for larger gatherings. Planning something special? Several covered areas can be reserved for events.
There's even an outdoor amphitheater that hosts community events and performances during the warmer months.
Play All Day
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the well-maintained sand volleyball courts lining the beach area and open playfields for impromptu games. Unless there's a tournament happening, the volleyball courts are usually available for casual play.
Kids have their own dedicated playground with play structures conveniently located near the picnic areas. Of course, the sandy beach itself doubles as nature's playground for the little ones.
Fishing fans can cast a line from the fishing pier or launch their boats from the boat launch ramp for full Columbia River access. Salmon fishing from the shoreline is particularly popular among regular visitors.
Wild Encounters
Bring your binoculars! The park's riverside ecosystem makes it a prime spot for wildlife viewing and birdwatching. Spring and winter are especially rewarding as migratory birds pass through, creating a natural spectacle for nature enthusiasts.
The peaceful setting along the Columbia creates numerous opportunities to observe native bird species and other wildlife going about their day in their natural habitat.
Good to Know
The park does charge for parking year-round: $2 for motorcycles, $3 for cars, $6 for cars with trailers, and $8 for buses or motor homes. If you're a frequent visitor, the $30 annual pass for Clark County parks might be worth considering.
Restrooms are available throughout the park, however keep in mind some may close during the winter months. Four-legged friends are welcome, but remember to keep them leashed at all times.
