About the Location
A Place with Prairie Heritage
Named in 1977 after Laura Ingalls Wilder of "Little House on the Prairie" fame (a Wisconsin native born in Baraboo), this green space has been serving the community for decades. The city acquired the land in 1974 using matching LAWCON funds, after initially proposing it as a combined park and school site back in 1972.
How It Came Together
As the surrounding neighborhood boomed in the late 70s, the park began taking shape. Development happened gradually, with various features added over time. By the winter of 1981, a shelter stood ready just in time for ice skating season.
Today, you'll come across broad sidewalks meant for your morning jog or evening stroll. Picnic tables dot the landscape (though heads up - there aren't any grills if you're planning a cookout). When nature calls, clean restrooms are available, and a water fountain offers refreshment on hot summer days.
Things to Do
Kids love the playground with its swings and slides, while sports enthusiasts can shoot some hoops on the basketball courts or play a game on the baseball field. Soccer players appreciate the dedicated soccer fields for practice or impromptu matches.
Sometimes the best park days involve nothing more than lounging on a blanket, and the open green spaces here provide plenty of room for exactly that. The layout provides a generally safe environment for visitors of all ages.
Part of the Neighborhood
Nestled within Robinson Avenue's curve, the park partially wraps around Wilder School, which offers additional playground equipment you're welcome to use. In 2007, the park became home to a touching memorial for Arnie Wolff, a Green Bay firefighter who lost his life while serving the community. The Wilder Neighborhood Association spearheaded this tribute.
More than just a patch of green, this park represents the neighborhood's backyard and meeting spot. Its proximity to Wilder School makes it especially convenient for families looking to burn off some energy after school.
Getting There
The park offers plenty of parking for visitors. The grounds are well-maintained with a practical layout.
