Bear Mound Park

A Step Back in Time

Found in Madison, Wisconsin, Bear Mound Park might be small at just 1.6 acres, but it holds a treasure of immense historical value. The star of this little green space is an ancient effigy mound shaped like a bear - hence the park's fitting name. Stretching 82 feet long, this earthen bear is one of the few surviving effigy mounds you can still find in the Madison area.

Dating back to somewhere between 700 and 1200 A.D., the mound was crafted by indigenous peoples as part of their burial and ceremonial practices. It's remarkably well-preserved, with only a small section of the rear leg lost to modern road development.

Sacred Ground

In Native American culture, the bear effigy holds deep significance, likely representing life on earth's surface, including humankind. If you look closely, you'll notice there's also one linear mound still existing on private residential property south of Vilas Circle - a remnant of what was once a larger group of mounds in the area.

It's no surprise that this special place received official recognition as a City of Madison landmark on May 19, 1975, and earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places.
