About the Location
Lakeside Gem
Found on the shores of Lake Mendota near Maple Bluff in Madison, Wisconsin, Burrows Park spans a modest 10.56 acres but packs in plenty of charm. The park's rustic open-air shelter offers beautiful views of the lake - great for when you're having lunch or gathering with friends. If you're a sunset chaser, this spot is considered one of the best sunset viewing locations in Madison.
A Touch of History
Beyond its natural beauty, the park features a historical Native American effigy mound just east of the parking lot. This straight-winged bird effigy stretches 128 feet across and dates back to around 700-1200 A.D.
Restored in 1934, this mound isn't just an interesting landmark; it's considered sacred by modern Native Americans. Its significance hasn't gone unnoticed either - it became a City of Madison landmark on May 19, 1975, and earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places.
What to Do
If you're into sailing, you'll feel right at home here. The park is a hub for the Mendota Yacht Club, whose members regularly launch their scows from the shoreline. Speaking of the shoreline, in September 2018, it was officially named the Grant Frautschi Shoreline to honor his contributions to Madison Parks Foundation, Madison Parks, and the city itself.
Kids will love the playground, while the multipurpose field offers plenty of space for impromptu soccer games or tossing a frisbee. Being right on Lake Mendota means water activities abound - grab your canoe or kayak, try your luck fishing from the pier, or even give windsurfing a go when the wind is just right.
Places to Gather
The large shelter here isn't your average park pavilion - it comes complete with a charming fireplace that adds a cozy touch to any gathering. No matter if you're planning a family reunion or a small get-together, this covered space offers protection from surprise rain showers while still letting you soak in those lovely lake views.
You'll come across clean, upgraded restrooms in a separate building by the parking lot, along with water fountains scattered around the grounds. And yes, alcohol is permitted here - so feel free to bring along a cooler for your picnic or cookout.
Bringing Fido
Dog parents rejoice! Burrows Park is dog-friendly, though your furry friends need to stay on leash. The open green spaces provide plenty of room for your pup to sniff around and enjoy some fresh air alongside you.
Good to Know
Parking is plentiful, which is always a plus. The overall vibe is peaceful and relaxing, but you might notice some aircraft noise due to the park's proximity to the airport. You can visit daily from 4 AM to 10 PM, but heads up - the parking lot might be closed during winter months.
