About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Right next to the shores of Lake Monona, Hudson Park might be small at just 4.75 acres, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in character and history. This Madison park offers peaceful lake views and water access that locals appreciate.
The park features three Native American effigy mounds that have stood the test of time. Dating back to somewhere between 500-1200 A.D., these ancient earthworks shaped like a bear, a lynx, and a lizard led to the park becoming a City of Madison Historical Landmark in 1990. These mounds were once part of a larger group of about 30 in the area - a window into the landscape's rich past.
Cultural Touchstones
As you explore Hudson Park, you'll come across a bronze memorial honoring the Ho-Chunk nation. There's a story behind this artwork that makes it even more meaningful - it was crafted in 1991 by Native American artist Harry Whitehorse from the trunk of a hackberry tree that had been struck by lightning. The sculpture features intricate carvings of various animals alongside a Ho-Chunk warrior, connecting visitors to the area's indigenous heritage.
Recent Refresh
In 2012, the park got some thoughtful updates that enhanced the beach area's safety, accessibility, and overall look. The improvements included replacing an aging stone wall and creating better access points for kayakers and canoeists to get in and out of the water.
You'll also notice the vegetated riprap along the shore - not just a random feature, but a purposeful addition to protect the shoreline from erosion. These changes have helped preserve this special place for future generations.
Nearby Park
While Hudson Park may not be the largest green space in Madison, it is a valuable neighborhood retreat. It's one of those places where natural beauty and cultural history intertwine along Lake Monona's edge, offering a peaceful escape and a connection to the land's storied past.
