About Marshall Park
Lakeside Serenity
Located on the western shore of Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin, Marshall Park offers 37 acres of natural beauty and recreation options that make it a wonderful escape from the city bustle.
The park's prime location treats you to breathtaking views of Lake Mendota that change with the seasons. If you're an early riser, catching a sunrise here is something special - the way the light plays across the water creates a peaceful moment that feels miles away from downtown Madison, even though you're still in the city.
Beach Vibes & Water Fun
The small sandy beach area is meant for dipping your toes in the water or spreading out a towel for some sun. The sand quality is pretty good with few rocks to worry about, but like any natural lake, algae levels can change throughout the summer.
Water enthusiasts will appreciate the well-maintained five-lane boat launch with plenty of trailer parking. Local fishing fans frequently cast off from here, hoping to reel in the day's catch.
Want to explore the lake but don't have your own watercraft? Marshall Boats (also called Madison Boats) has you covered with rentals ranging from pontoon boats to kayaks, paddleboards, and canoes. It's a fantastic way to experience Lake Mendota from a different perspective.

Park Features
Tall, mature trees create welcome patches of shade throughout Marshall Park, well-suited for when the summer sun gets intense. The grassy areas invite impromptu picnics or just lounging with a good book.
If you're visiting with kids, the playground offers newer equipment to keep them entertained. Just note that it's closer to the parking area than the beach, so you might need to walk back and forth if you're planning on both swimming and playing.
The sand volleyball courts are well-kept and ready for casual games or more competitive matches. Nothing beats a sunset volleyball game followed by cooling off in the lake!
The sheltered picnic area makes family gatherings weather-proof, while the deck space provides a shaded spot to take in those gorgeous lake views.
Practical Info
You'll find public restrooms with running water on the park's south side. They're basic but clean and functional - which is all you really need for a day at the park.
Parking is free and plentiful, although it does fill up quickly on those perfect summer weekends when everyone has the same idea. There are plenty of trash and recycling bins scattered throughout, showing Wisconsin's commitment to keeping natural spaces clean.
A Touch of History
Beyond recreation, Marshall Park has a meaningful historical dimension. Take a moment to appreciate "Mildred," a sculpture honoring Wisconsin-born resistance fighter Mildred Fish Harnack, who was executed on Hitler's direct order in 1943.
The park also features a thoughtful Holocaust memorial, adding a layer of reflection and remembrance to your visit that many find moving and significant.
