About the Location
A Bit of History
Located next to Madison's East Isthmus rail corridor sits McPike Park, a 9.21-acre green space with an interesting backstory. Once known as Central Park, it got its current name in April 2018 to honor Milton McPike, a cherished East High School principal who made a lasting impact as both an educator and community leader.
The park wasn't always there - it emerged from a grassroots effort when neighborhood groups came together to breathe new life into what was once a post-industrial area. Now it reflects the successful community vision and persistence that transformed the area.
What You'll Find There
A major feature of McPike Park is Madison's first skatepark, which opened to the public in September 2015. Known as the Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman Skatepark, it's completely free and welcomes wheeled enthusiasts daily from 4 am to 10 pm. If you're planning an evening session, you'll appreciate the lights that stay on from dusk until 10 pm between April 15 and October 15.
What makes this skatepark special is its community. Skaters of all ages and abilities roll through here, and there's a notably supportive vibe - even if you're just finding your balance, you'll likely find encouragement rather than judgment from the regulars.
The rest of the park, thoughtfully designed by MSA, offers a refreshing urban green space with meandering bicycle and pedestrian paths, a clean restroom pavilion (open seasonally), and a spacious plaza area. You'll come across picnic tables scattered throughout, but you might want to bring an umbrella on sunny days since shade structures are limited. The open layout means plenty of sunshine and grassy areas ideal for throwing a frisbee or spreading out a blanket.
Community Heartbeat
McPike Park really comes alive through its events. The space transforms all year long to host various festivals, including the much-anticipated La Fête de Marquette - a lively celebration featuring impressive musical lineups, delicious food vendors, and an atmosphere that draws crowds from across the city.
If you're looking for fresh produce, mark your calendar for Tuesdays from spring through fall, when the park hosts a farmers' market that locals have come to cherish as part of their weekly routine.
McPike Park provides both green space and a gathering place for local events. The open layout works well for concerts and gatherings, making it a versatile venue where neighbors often come together.
