About the Location
History and Design
Nestled along the eastern shore of Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin, Tenney Park spans 38 acres of what was once just marshland. Back in 1899, attorney Daniel K. Tenney purchased this land, and landscape architect Ossian Cole Simonds transformed it into the scenic retreat we enjoy today.
One of the park's defining features is its peaceful lagoon with a small island - part of Simonds' original vision. The park flows seamlessly into the Yahara River Parkway, creating continuous pathways along the water. Pretty forward-thinking for his time, Simonds emphasized native Midwestern plants throughout the design rather than importing exotic species.
Recreational Amenities
Whether you're looking to break a sweat or just enjoy a leisurely afternoon, Tenney Park offers plenty of options. The beach area on Lake Mendota offers swimming access, and there are boat launches if you're itching to get out on the water. For those who prefer land activities, wheelchair-accessible paved trails wind through some genuinely picturesque spots.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the basketball courts, tennis/pickleball courts, soccer fields, and volleyball courts. Families with kids can head to the playground, while the expansive grassy areas work perfectly for everything from frisbee to picnics or just lounging with a good book.
Water Features and Fishing
Situated between Lake Mendota and the Yahara River, this park is a fishing hotspot. You can often spot anglers reeling in musky, pike, and other catches along the shoreline or from the pier.
The lock and dam system connecting the lake to the river isn't just historically interesting - it's actually pretty fascinating to watch in action during summer months. The pier extending into Lake Mendota provides nice views of both the water and Madison's skyline in the distance.
Winter Activities
When winter blankets Madison, Tenney Park becomes a popular ice skating destination. The lagoon freezes over to create a natural skating area that looks like something straight out of a holiday card. There's even a designated hockey rink for those who prefer a faster pace on the ice.
Need to warm up? Head to the warming shelter where you can rent skates and grab something to sip on. Ice skating here has become something of a winter ritual for locals of all ages - a quintessential Madison experience when the temperatures drop.
Wildlife and Nature
The park represents home to a surprising variety of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for different bird species, beavers, and other small creatures along the shoreline and wooded areas.
Decorative footbridges crisscross the lagoon and river, creating scenic views that change with each season. If you're timing your visit, consider going at sunset - the views over Lake Mendota are particularly beautiful then.
Historical Significance
Beyond its natural beauty, Tenney Park boasts several historical features, including its iconic bridges and the engineering marvel that is the lock and dam system connecting Lake Mendota to the Yahara River.
It's no wonder the park was designated a City of Madison Landmark in 1995 and earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. These designations recognize what locals already know - that this space holds cultural and historical significance for Madison.
Location and Overview
With its blend of natural landscapes, recreational options, and historical elements, Tenney Park functions as a community space throughout all four seasons.
The central location makes it an accessible urban oasis where you can enjoy scenic views and participate in both land and water activities. The park provides both quiet spots for solitude and open areas for socializing, all within city limits.
