About the Location

Waterfront Escape

Tucked away at the east end of Greenfield Avenue in Milwaukee, Harbor View Plaza is the city's first waterfront park in the Harbor District, opened in July 2019.

The plaza offers breathtaking views of Milwaukee's inner harbor, where you can watch the working port in action while Lake Michigan stretches out before you. There's something calming about sitting here with the Milwaukee River views as the world slows down a bit.

A Design That Tells Stories

What makes this park special is how it bridges the area's industrial roots with what the community needs today. You can't miss the 40-foot-tall orange lookout tower constructed from repurposed shipping containers - a nod to the maritime heritage that shaped this neighborhood.

Climb the tower and you'll discover multiple levels fitted with benches, ship's wheels, and portholes that frame the harbor views. The highlight? A red spiral slide that brings out the child in everyone. Even adults can't resist the twisty descent that somehow makes you forget about adulting for a moment.

Get Your Hands Wet

The interactive water play area might be our favorite part of the plaza. Stone blocks and basins stand at different heights, interspersed with wooden cubes and troughs filled with small rocks - all waiting for a bit of imagination.

Two water pumps put you in control, letting you direct water flows through the various channels. It's hands-on learning about water movement that doesn't feel like learning at all. This feature runs during the warmer months and tends to be a magnet for kids (though plenty of adults sneak in some splashing too).

Launch Your Adventure

Fancy exploring Milwaukee from the water? The plaza includes a public kayak and canoe launch, offering rare water access in this part of the city. If you're an experienced paddler or just wanting to try something new, you can easily put in here and explore the inner harbor from a fresh perspective.

There's plenty of parking if you're bringing your own watercraft - a practical touch that regular paddlers really appreciate.

Learn While You Lounge

Scattered throughout the plaza, educational placards share fascinating tidbits about Lake Michigan and the harbor. You might be surprised by some of the facts about the lake - we certainly were when we first read them.

Practical Matters

Accessibility was clearly a priority in designing this space, with rubberized flooring around the play structure and concrete paths throughout. Note that while you'll come across benches and picnic spots, there aren't any restroom facilities available.

The park is dog-friendly, so your four-legged family members are welcome to join the outing. Just be aware that while the park is fenced on three sides, the boat launch area opens directly to the water, so keep a close eye on little ones there.

Community Heart

Throughout the year, Harbor View Plaza hosts events like Harbor Fest and Summer en la Plaza, featuring concerts, art exhibitions, nature shows, and performances. These gatherings have made the plaza a popular community spot.

It's a good spot to bring the family, clear your head, or enjoy lunch with a view. In a city full of bustling spaces, this waterfront corner provides a moment of calm.
