About the Location

A Historic Hill with a Story

Perched at the intersection of North Avenue and Humboldt Boulevard in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood, Kilbourn Reservoir Park spans 35 acres of green space with a fascinating past. The land was gifted to the city back in the 1870s by former Milwaukee mayor Byron Kilbourn - a contribution that has benefited generations of locals.

Not Just Any Hill

What makes this park special? For starters, you're standing on what used to be a massive 21-million-gallon underground drinking water reservoir that served the city from 1873 until 2004. After being decommissioned and removed in 2006-2007, the site kept its distinctive hill shape, making it the highest park in Milwaukee (altitude-wise). A notable example of urban space repurposing.

What You'll Find There

The park strikes a nice balance between active and passive recreation spaces. Head to the northern section if you're looking for flat ground for a pickup soccer game. Meanwhile, the central and southern portions feature that iconic hill that dominates the landscape.

Around the park, you'll notice thoughtful landscaping with trees, shrubs, and swaying prairie grasses that do double duty - they look pretty while also helping with stormwater absorption. The walking paths are generally well-maintained, though you might want to bring a hat on sunny days since shade can be limited in some spots.

Those Views Though

Let's be honest - the main attraction here is the panoramic views, which are among the best in Milwaukee. From this elevated perch, you can take in the entire Milwaukee skyline, the East Side, and even catch glimpses of Lake Michigan in the distance.

Photography enthusiasts, take note: sunset here is something special when the city lights begin to twinkle against the darkening sky. Several benches are strategically placed throughout the park, excellent for sitting back and soaking in the scenery. It's considered one of the best sunset-watching spots in the city.

A Neighborhood Gathering Place

Beyond the views, Kilbourn Reservoir Park is a beloved community space. In winter, the natural slopes transform into popular sledding hills (much safer than that improvised cardboard box slide down your basement stairs). In warmer months, you'll spot kids and the young-at-heart rolling down these same hills.

The grassy areas make for great picnic spots, but you'll want to bring a blanket as picnic tables are limited. Whether you're looking for a peaceful solo retreat or a place to toss a frisbee with friends, this elevated oasis offers a welcome breath of fresh air amid the urban landscape.
