About the Location

Urban Oasis

Located in the heart of Milwaukee's Near West Side neighborhood, Davidson Park is a refreshing 4.8-acre green retreat nestled within the Harley-Davidson corporate campus. Since opening in June 2024, this former parking lot has been transformed into a community-driven green space developed by the Harley-Davidson Foundation based on input from local residents.

What makes this park unique is its setting - surrounded by the iconic Harley-Davidson Headquarters and Molson Coors, you're literally immersed in Milwaukee's industrial heritage while enjoying fresh air and open space. It offers a uniquely Milwaukee experience.

The Hub

At the heart of Davidson Park sits "The Hub," a sunken gathering space stretching about 272 feet across. Think of it as a natural amphitheater with tiered seating that's embraced by an impressive array of greenery - including 120 different native plant species.

From here, you can take in views of Harley's historic brick buildings on one side while gazing across the park's green expanses on the other. The space creates an interesting contrast - its industrial rust aesthetic blends rugged and refined elements, providing a backdrop for concerts and community markets.

Sustainable Design

Davidson incorporates eco-friendly engineering beneath its surface. The green infrastructure - native bioswales, permeable pavers, and cisterns - helps capture and manage stormwater, contributing to regional environmental efforts.

Aiming to become one of Wisconsin's first SITES-certified projects, the park demonstrates real environmental commitment. The native plantings aren't just beautiful - they support local pollinators while requiring less maintenance than traditional lawns would. A practical approach to sustainability.

Park Areas

The layout offers several distinct spaces to enjoy. Main Street is a pedestrian thoroughfare meant for farmers markets and food truck gatherings. Union Plaza welcomes you as the main entrance, while the North and South Lawns provide open green spaces where you can spread out a blanket or join community events.

You'll also discover viewing hills for taking in the scenery, a peaceful Potawatomi Serenity Garden for quiet moments, and a nature-based playground that encourages kids to explore and play creatively.

Unique Features

At the center of the Hub lies the Foundation Stone - a striking four-foot-diameter cast iron medallion designed by local artist and Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design student Megan Huss. This piece celebrates both the Near West Side community and the park's creation story.

The park's design includes a large ramp leading to the center that's become a hit with the non-motorized wheel crowd - think bikes and scooters (though skateboards and motorized vehicles aren't allowed here).

Natural Playground

The playground is a distinctive feature of Davidson Park. Instead of the usual plastic structures, you'll find thoughtfully designed play areas using natural materials like wood and metal. This nature-based approach encourages open-ended play with plenty of climbing opportunities suitable for kids of all ages and abilities.

Accessibility has been woven throughout the playground design, making it welcoming for children with varying abilities. And parents will appreciate the strategic placement of benches that make it easy to keep an eye on the little ones while they play.

Community Space

At its core, Davidson Park aims to be a genuine community hub - a place for both everyday enjoyment and special gatherings. It's the result of collaboration between Harley-Davidson, design firms, and local residents, creating an inclusive and accessible public space for the neighborhood.

Accessibility shows up across the park's design, with wheelchair ramps at each tier of the amphitheater, accessible benches, and dedicated wheelchair spaces at picnic tables. An added bonus: Harley-Davidson provides 24/7 security staff for the park.

Amenities

Note that the park currently offers portable restrooms rather than permanent facilities. While they're well-maintained and clean, they're located a bit far from the playground area, which might require some planning with young children.

One thing to consider during summer visits is the limited shade around the park, especially around the playground. On sunny days, those metal slides and open areas can get pretty warm, so you might find morning or evening visits more comfortable during hot weather spells.
