Creamery Park
About Creamery Park
A Piece of Tempe History
Positioned on 8th Street and Una Avenue in Tempe, Arizona, you'll find Creamery Park - a cozy 2.8-acre green space that packs a surprising punch despite its modest size. Established in 1999 through a city-developer partnership, this park wasn't named after a famous citizen or service club as many others in the area are. Instead, it carries a name that honors something much more meaningful to the community's past.
From Milk to Memories
The name Creamery Park isn't just a random choice - it's a nod to the historic Tempe Creamery that once played a central role in local life. Back in 1892, what started as F.A. Hough's ice plant evolved into a dairy processing facility that became the heartbeat of the community.
Over the years, this dairy landmark operated under several names including Tempe Creamery, Tempe-Mesa Produce Company, and Pacific Creamery. The Borden Milk Company purchased it in 1927, and it continued to be a major employer until closing its doors in 1953. It's nice to see this piece of local history preserved, if only in name.
What You'll Find Today
Fast forward to today, and Creamery Park is a popular recreational spot for nearby residents. The recently renovated playground features multiple structures ideal for kids 4 and up. One of the coolest features has to be the music-making area where little ones can channel their inner composers with interactive sound elements.
If you're looking to shoot some hoops, there's a half-court basketball court waiting for your next game. Planning a gathering? The park offers several picnic areas with tables, a covered ramada conveniently positioned between two playground sections, and BBQ facilities scattered throughout for those weekend cookouts.
For the Four-Legged Friends
One of the standout features at Creamery Park is the fenced off-leash dog area - a haven where your furry companions can run free and make new friends. The dog park comes equipped with a doggie water fountain (because play is thirsty work!) and comfortable seating for humans to relax while watching their pets.
While not the largest dog park around, its typically quiet atmosphere makes it an excellent option for more shy or reserved dogs who might feel overwhelmed in busier spaces.
Green Space and Shade
There's a generous open grass field great for impromptu games of football, cricket, frisbee - or whatever sport strikes your fancy. Mature trees line the perimeter, offering natural shade that's especially welcome during Arizona's warmer months.
The thoughtful layout provides plenty of room for children to explore and play while also creating peaceful spots for adults to unwind. Regular security patrols help maintain the park's clean, safe atmosphere.
Note that there are no public restrooms on site - something to keep in mind when planning longer visits. Still, with its versatile facilities, clean environment, and community-friendly size, Creamery Park offers a pleasant retreat for nearby residents looking to enjoy some quality outdoor time.
