About the Location
A Place of Remembrance
Found on Longfellow Avenue, Alvernon Park is dedicated to Jeffrey H. Ross, a Tucson Police Officer who grew up in the Peter Howell Neighborhood. After serving the Tucson Police Department for four years, Officer Ross was tragically killed while working undercover on February 18, 1982. If you're interested in learning more about local heroes, you can also visit the Tucson Police Department's Memorial Courtyard where Officer Ross is similarly honored.
What You'll Find
This cozy 3.1-acre green space offers a welcome escape from the urban landscape. We appreciate how the mature trees create pools of shade across the park - quite welcome during those scorching Arizona afternoons.
The layout is pretty straightforward but effective, with open grassy areas great for throwing a frisbee or just sprawling out with a good book. A newer walking trail loops around the park, which has been a hit with the neighbors (though it did claim some parking spots in the process).
Get Moving
Looking to shoot some hoops? The basketball court is well-maintained and usually has a friendly game or two happening on weekends.
For the little ones, there's a playground with swings, slides, and a jungle gym. The woodchip ground covering is a thoughtful safety feature for those inevitable tumbles.
Natural Touches
Despite being modest in size, the park has its share of winged residents. Keep your eyes peeled for hummingbirds darting between flowers and the occasional canary perched in the trees - a small but lovely reminder of nature's presence in the city.
The grassy areas are kept in good shape, making them ideal spots for an impromptu picnic under the shade of one of the many trees.
Bringing Fido Along?
Your four-legged friend will feel right at home here. The park is a popular spot for neighborhood dog walkers, with pet waste stations stocked with bags so you can clean up after your pooch.
What we really appreciate is the dog-friendly water fountain that sits alongside the regular drinking fountains - a thoughtful touch that shows this park was designed with all visitors in mind, furry ones included.
Community Hub
Alvernon Park functions as both a green space and a neighborhood gathering place. Whether you're looking to exercise, relax, or simply reflect, the park accommodates various activities.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. While there aren't any public restrooms available, its nestled location within the neighborhood makes it an easy stop for locals. Though not the biggest park in Tucson, it's a valued space in the neighborhood.
