About Underwood Park

Origins & Where to Find It

Underwood Park is a breath of fresh air in west Fayetteville, Arkansas - a relatively new addition to the city's green spaces. In a generous gesture that transformed the community landscape, Craig and Laura Underwood donated 38 acres of land in 2019, with visions of growing this natural haven to around 65 acres through future contributions and leases.

You'll discover this peaceful retreat on what was once the Razorback golf course, just west of Dean Solomon Road. The park provides west Fayetteville residents with access to community park space they previously lacked. The park connects via Clabber Creek Trail to other local spots including Gary Hampton Softball Complex, Holcomb Elementary, and the adjacent Wilson Springs nature preserve.

Natural Wonders

Wander through Underwood Park and you'll discover two charming ponds in the northern section. The walking trails - repurposed from old golf cart paths - maintain a wonderfully unpolished feel that lets the natural environment shine through. You can choose between active recreation or simply sitting quietly to take in the scenery.

The location sits near Wilson Springs preserve and along the Clabber Creek Corridor, forming part of what locals sometimes call an "emerald necklace" of green spaces threading through the area. The natural meadow setting has become home to a surprising variety of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot beavers, rabbits, or any number of bird species that have made these acres their home.

Paths to Explore

A meandering paved trail takes you through beautiful meadow areas, making this spot meant for those who simply want to walk and connect with nature. Unlike parks centered around playground equipment, Underwood Park is more about immersing yourself in a natural ecosystem - an ideal place to clear your head and fill your lungs with fresh air.

Feel free to bring your four-legged friends along, but remember they need to stay on a leash at all times to protect both the wildlife and the natural environment everyone's there to enjoy.

Looking Ahead

The park's future is taking shape, with its master plan recently adopted by the Parks Board on January 3, 2024. If you're curious about what's coming next, the first phase of development will likely focus on enhancing the entry drive and parking areas north of the creek.

All these improvements are being funded by the 2019 bond, with construction expected to kick off in 2025 and wrap up in 2026.

Good to Know Before You Go

The park welcomes visitors from sunrise to sunset daily. Remember to keep your pets leashed during your visit, and note that smoking, alcohol, and firearms aren't permitted in the park.

Overnight camping isn't allowed, so plan your visit as a day trip. You can find the entrance on the northeast side - look for the white entry gate off Deane Solomon Road.
