About Centennial Park
A Glimpse Into History
Situated in Little Rock, Arkansas, Centennial Park is a neighborhood green space spanning a modest 2-acre footprint. Occupying a single city block in central Little Rock's bustling urban landscape, this park holds more history than you might expect at first glance.
The land once housed the Centennial Public School, an architectural haven designed in 1894 by local architect Thomas Harding. While the school building was demolished in 1971 to create this community space, the park designers made the thoughtful decision to preserve the school's bell tower, which now stands as a silent storyteller of days gone by.
Development of the park we enjoy today began in 1973, with a significant helping hand from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's funding program.
What You'll Find There
The park's crown jewel is undoubtedly the preserved bell tower and staircase from the original school building. Standing proudly at the park entrance, this architectural remnant does more than look pretty - it connects visitors to the educational legacy that once thrived here.
Get Your Game On
If you're feeling active, the park offers a basketball court and tennis court. Fair warning: these facilities have seen their share of Little Rock weather over the years, and occasionally show signs of needing some TLC.
For those seeking a more laid-back experience, the park offers generous green space excellent for reading a book or simply watching the world go by. There's something calming about finding this pocket of tranquility amid the surrounding urban energy.
Kid-Friendly Zone
Got little ones in tow? The park's playground equipment caters to children across age groups. You'll come across swings sized appropriately for both toddlers and older kids, alongside slides and climbing structures that invite exploration and adventure.
The thoughtful layout means parents can easily keep an eye on children of different ages as they find their own fun. Nearby picnic areas make it convenient to extend your visit through lunchtime or afternoon snacks - just bring your favorite sandwiches and enjoy dining al fresco.
Good To Know
You'll discover plenty of parking available if you're driving to the park. Centennial Park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 7PM.
As with any community space, your help in keeping the park clean for everyone is appreciated - trash receptacles are available around the grounds.
