About the Location

Community Transformation

Halcyon Commons is a small community-designed park located in Berkeley, California. Originally a 28-space parking lot, this 0.2-acre (8,710 sq. ft.) green space was transformed through a grassroots effort led by the Halcyon Neighborhood Association in the early 1990s.

The park's development was a collaborative effort between local residents, businesses, and the City of Berkeley, showcasing the power of community initiative.

Park Features

The park features a large grassy area surrounded by flowering shrubs and trees, providing a peaceful oasis in the urban environment. Its creation involved extensive community participation, including hands-on design workshops and volunteer planting efforts.

Community Hub

Halcyon Commons serves as a central gathering place for the neighborhood, offering residents a space for relaxation and recreation.

In 1997, Halcyon Commons received an Excellence in Design award from Berkeley Design Advocates, recognizing its successful transformation from a utilitarian parking lot to a vibrant public space.
