Back in the early 1990s, what's now a lush 0.2-acre pocket park was nothing more than a 28-space parking lot. That's when the Halcyon Neighborhood Association stepped in with a vision and the determination to make it happen.

This grassroots transformation perfectly captures Berkeley's community spirit - local residents, businesses, and city officials all rolled up their sleeves to create something special together.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Just a block away from Telegraph Avenue, this little urban space offers a peaceful retreat. The large central lawn is embraced by flowering shrubs and trees that bring color and life to the neighborhood.

What makes this space unique is how it came to be - neighbors attended design workshops and literally got their hands dirty during volunteer planting days. Their personal investment shows in every corner of this thoughtfully designed space.

The park's successful transformation didn't go unnoticed. In 1997, Berkeley Design Advocates awarded Halcyon Commons with an Excellence in Design award, recognizing how this former parking lot had become a vibrant community treasure that enriches the lives of everyone around it.
