About the Location
History and Background
Situated in Costa Mesa, California, TeWinkle Park covers 49 acres of recreational space. The park opened its gates to the public on January 31, 1965, and bears the name of Charles TeWinkle, Costa Mesa's first mayor when the city incorporated in 1953.
Natural Features
At the heart of the park lies a charming lake with a waterfall and fountain displays that create a peaceful atmosphere. This little oasis is home to a variety of waterfowl - you'll likely spot ducks and geese paddling around or waddling through the grass during your visit.
The landscape here offers a bit of everything - open grassy areas for soaking up sunshine and mature trees providing cool shade on hot days. Winding paths cut through the grounds, great for a casual stroll or a brisk walk if you're feeling energetic.
Keep your eyes peeled for the turtles that occasionally surface in the pond and the friendly ground squirrels that have become something of local celebrities among regular visitors. Small bridges arch over water features across the park, offering nice vantage points for photos.
Family Amenities
Kids gravitate toward Angels Playground, a modern play space with all the essentials for childhood adventures. You'll find bridges, tunnels, and slides aplenty, all set on a safety-conscious rubber surface. Little ones particularly enjoy the sandbox area and swings.
When hunger strikes, head to one of the covered picnic areas equipped with tables and barbecue grills - they're well-suited for family lunches or casual get-togethers. Several gazebos scattered across the park provide additional shaded retreats for eating or simply relaxing.
Sports and Recreation
Sports enthusiasts have plenty of options here with well-maintained baseball and softball fields and tennis courts. The park also features an amphitheater that hosts community events and performances during the year.
Skateboarders can practice their skills at the dedicated skate park within the TeWinkle complex. Dog parents, you're covered too - the Costa Mesa Bark Park section offers a safe off-leash area where your four-legged friends can run and play. Many visitors also enjoy walking their leashed dogs along the park's extensive network of paths.
Amenities
Practical amenities include multiple restroom facilities conveniently located across the grounds - a definite plus if you're planning to spend several hours exploring. You'll discover plenty of parking options around the perimeter, with some areas offering shaded spots to keep your car cool.
The walking trails feature a mix of flat sections and gentle inclines that accommodate visitors of all fitness levels. Water fountains are available when you need to hydrate during your adventure.
