Gilman Park
About Gilman Park
A Hidden Natural Retreat
Situated in Fullerton since 1978, this 13.7-acre haven offers a genuine escape from city life. There's a bit of history here too - the park is named after Richard Gilman, the pioneer who established California's first commercial Valencia orange grove. In fact, the western portion of the park was once part of the Gilman family's homestead from 1906.
Walking through Gilman Park feels like discovering a secret natural world. Majestic sycamore and eucalyptus trees create a cooling canopy overhead, while a gentle creek meanders through the landscape. The sound of flowing water adds to the peaceful atmosphere - and yes, it's actually flowing! It's one of those simple pleasures that can make your visit unexpectedly delightful.
Bridges & Pathways
Four rustic wooden bridges cross the creek, adding a touch of charm while connecting different parts of the park. The landscape here isn't one-dimensional - you've got a flattened valley floor with an irregular lawn area, plus an upper level you can reach via steeper trails that reward you with different perspectives.
Despite being surrounded by neighborhoods, Gilman Park maintains a wonderful sense of seclusion. Even the parking areas are thoughtfully positioned out of sight from within the park. You can find a few parking spaces at the end of Eucalyptus Place alongside the park, or at the Treeview Place entrance.
Nature at Its Best
This isn't a place for organized sports or playground equipment - Gilman Park shines as a natural setting excellent for bird watching, nature photography, and leisurely strolls. The diverse ecosystem attracts an impressive variety of birds, including some rare warblers during fall and spring migrations. If you're into birding, you'll appreciate why locals consider this a little paradise.
The unpaved trails wind through rolling hills, creating an ideal environment for contemplative walks. What's remarkable is how peaceful it feels - somehow, even with Highway 57 nearby, the natural sounds take center stage here.
Room to Breathe
The open grassy spaces provide perfect spots to relax, read a book, or just enjoy being outdoors. Unlike more developed recreational areas, Gilman Park emphasizes natural beauty over built amenities, creating a refreshing oasis in an urban setting.
If you're feeling ambitious, the park is a natural connector between the larger Craig Regional Park and Tri-Cities Park, allowing for extended nature experiences without leaving the city.
A Park Through Time
Gilman Park has evolved over the years. Old-timers might remember when it featured more recreational equipment, including concrete slides that were later removed for safety reasons.
Today, the park is cherished for its quiet, natural character - a peaceful retreat where you can temporarily forget you're in the middle of a bustling Southern California city.
