About Hillcrest Park

A Glimpse into History

Fullerton is home to a verdant oasis with a story to tell. Established in 1922, Hillcrest Park stretches across 37.8 acres, making it the oldest park in Fullerton. Nestled north of Downtown Fullerton and Fullerton College, it's embraced by Brea Boulevard, Harbor Boulevard, Valley View Drive, and Lemon Street.

The park's crown jewel is undoubtedly its historic fountain, a Depression-era masterpiece constructed by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. After sitting dormant since the 1970s, this aquatic centerpiece sprang back to life in 2018 as part of a major renovation, reconnecting present-day visitors with the park's storied past.

Rolling Hills and Breathtaking Vistas

Hillcrest isn't a typical flat, manicured park. Its undulating terrain provides excellent views of Fullerton, with western and southern panoramas that reward the climb to its highest points. The landscape features green spaces, mature trees, and seasonal flower beds that offer a peaceful retreat from the surrounding urban environment.

If you enjoy exploring on foot, you'll appreciate the network of walking trails that meander throughout the park. Whether you prefer the stability of paved paths or the natural feel of dirt trails, there's a route for every preference. Keep your eyes peeled for the park's furry residents - squirrels and other small creatures are often spotted going about their daily business among the trees.

Get Your Heart Pumping

Fitness enthusiasts have discovered Hillcrest's secret weapon: the "Hillcrest Stairs" added in 2017. These seven-foot-wide timber steps connect Lions Field to the main park area and are popular with local fitness enthusiasts. The stairs feature thoughtfully placed viewing decks where you can catch your breath while taking in the scenery.

Many locals make these stairs part of their regular workout routine, choosing between several stair pathways of varying difficulty. The park's natural inclines also provide an excellent cardio challenge - great for those looking to improve their fitness while enjoying the outdoors.

Something for Everyone

Scattered throughout the park are numerous picnic areas with tables, many offering welcome shade and lovely views. Planning a family gathering? Several spots come equipped with BBQ pits that are excellent for cookouts and celebrations.

The kids haven't been forgotten, with a charming playground featuring a forest theme where they can burn off energy. Sports enthusiasts can make use of several sports fields suitable for baseball and other activities. Restroom facilities are available at multiple locations, although they can get busy during weekends and holidays.

A Fresh Face

Hillcrest Park has been through quite a transformation in recent years. The 2018 renovation breathed new life into the Great Lawn in front of the fountain and added a bridge spanning Brea Creek.

These thoughtful updates have made the park more accessible and enjoyable without sacrificing its historic character or natural beauty.

Where Community Happens

More than just a pretty space, Hillcrest represents the backdrop for countless community moments. It's where wedding vows are exchanged, family reunions unfold, and community festivals bring neighbors together. Early risers can join the Sunday morning Zumba classes near the fountain from 7:30-8:30am, combining exercise with fresh air and community spirit.

The park includes several war memorials honoring Fullerton residents who served in major conflicts, including a dedicated Korean War memorial.

Capture the Moment

With its diverse landscapes and distinctive features, Hillcrest is popular among photographers of all levels. The restored fountain area is often used as a backdrop for milestone photos - from prom pictures to wedding portraits.

From certain spots in the park, you can see neighboring cities or even Disneyland's fireworks displays during holidays like the 4th of July and New Year's Eve.
