The crown jewel of the park is undoubtedly Mia's Dream Come True all-abilities playground. This isn't your average playground - it's a thoughtfully designed, gated space where kids of all abilities can play together without limitations. The playground features a wheelchair-accessible swing (something we don't see nearly enough of in public parks), interactive musical instruments for budding musicians, engaging sensory play areas, and themed structures including a fire truck and sailboat that spark imaginative play.

Book lovers will appreciate the park's Little Free Library reading corner, complete with comfortable seating where you can dive into a good story. There are also areas designed with braille for visually impaired visitors - a thoughtful touch that makes the park more welcoming for everyone. The playground's cushioned flooring provides peace of mind for parents, while multiple seating areas let you take a breather while keeping an eye on the little ones.

Beyond the inclusive playground, sports enthusiasts can enjoy the baseball and soccer fields that round out the park's recreational offerings.

Skate Area

If you're into skateboarding, you'll find your happy place at Tennyson's dedicated skate area. This 10,000 square foot facility isn't just an afterthought - it's a legitimate skate destination featuring a street course with banks and rails, plus a double bowl with metal coping for the more adventurous riders.

The bowls measure 5 and 6 feet deep, offering challenges that grow with your skills. Recently, the park added a pump track for bicycles right next to the skate area, giving older kids and teens another reason to put down their phones and enjoy some outdoor action.

Picnic and Fitness Areas

Looking for a spot for a family gathering? Tennyson Park offers open lawn spaces and picnic facilities. You can find multiple tables both inside and outside the playground area, with shady spots that are meant for escaping the California sun while enjoying an outdoor meal. There are also barbecue areas if you're looking to grill up some lunch.

For those looking to break a sweat, the park includes an NFC Fitness Court with equipment designed for various workout routines. It's like having an outdoor gym at your disposal - minus the membership fees.

Amenities and Accessibility

The restrooms at Tennyson Park are surprisingly high-tech, with motion-sensor doors and LED occupancy indicators that let you know which stalls are available. These accessible facilities accommodate visitors with disabilities and include all the basics you'd expect: running water, soap, and paper products.

The park stays open 24 hours daily, with street parking available along the perimeter. If you need accessible parking, you'll find designated spaces at the front of the park.

Ongoing Renovations

Heads up if you're planning a visit - Tennyson Park is getting a makeover. Renovations kicked off in June 2024 and should wrap up by mid-2025. While some areas might be temporarily closed during construction, most of the popular features remain open.

The renovation will bring some exciting additions, including updates to the skate park, new basketball and Bankshot courts, improved picnic areas, fresh site furnishings, better lighting, new pedestrian walkways, a dedicated parking lot, and bioretention basins. It might be a bit dusty for now, but these improvements promise to make an already great park even better.
