Edison Community Park
About Edison Community Park
History and Background
Found in Huntington Beach, California, Edison Community Park spans an impressive 39.69 acres of public recreational space. Dedicated on April 8, 1974, this park has a rather fascinating origin story - it was actually transformed from a former landfill site! Named after the neighboring Edison High School, this green space emerged from what was once the Cannery Street Landfill, which operated from 1957 until 1969.
After the landfill closed, Orange County handed the property over to the City of Huntington Beach, which reimagined the space into the vibrant community park we can enjoy today. It's quite a transformation from landfill to public park.
Facilities and Amenities
Edison Park has a mix of indoor and outdoor facilities for various interests and activities. The Edison Community Center is the indoor hub, housing four meeting rooms, a kitchen, a lounge, and a game room where you can challenge friends to a round of pool or ping-pong. This center also represents a local voting place and hosts various community gatherings.
Step outside and you'll discover baseball diamonds, basketball courts, newly added pickleball courts, handball courts, and a skate park where local boarders show off their skills. If you're just looking to relax, there are plenty of grassy areas, walking paths, and benches scattered around the grounds where you can unwind and enjoy some fresh air.
Playground Areas
Got kids? Edison Park features three separate playground areas designed with different age groups in mind. The main playground section has a large sand area with rubber matting beneath the newer equipment for added safety.
There are two main structures - one for little ones ages 2-5 and another for kids 5-12 years old. The older kids' structure is especially cool with its climbing ladders, monkey bars, slides, spiral pole, and fireman pole. Both infant swings and regular swings are available, so children of all ages can enjoy some swinging fun. While some equipment shows its age, everything remains safe and provides plenty of play options for the kiddos.
Programs and Activities
The Edison Community Center is a bustling hub of activity, offering over 200 recreation classes for everyone from toddlers to seniors. You can jump into a high-energy Zumba class, learn self-defense through karate, or find your zen with yoga or tai chi.
The center also offers tennis lessons, fitness boot camps, ballet, gymnastics, pilates, guitar lessons, cooking classes, dog training, and even surfing lessons. Regardless of whether you're looking to learn a new skill, get fit, or just meet some neighbors, there's likely a program that fits the bill.
Outdoor Recreation
The park comes alive with activity throughout the week. Basketball enthusiasts gather for pickup games, especially on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The seven pickleball courts have become quite the hotspot, drawing players of all skill levels (though you might want to watch out for the somewhat rough pavement).
Dog owners particularly appreciate the generous open spaces great for walking their four-legged friends. And if you're looking to get your steps in, the walking paths that wind through the grounds offer a pleasant route for a daily stroll or jog.
Wildlife and Natural Features
You might be surprised by the wildlife you can spot at Edison Park despite its urban setting. Keep your eyes peeled for majestic Great Blue Herons, wise-looking owls, and playful tree squirrels that make their homes in the park's pine trees.
The abundance of trees within the grounds provides welcome shade on sunny Southern California days, creating perfect spots to spread out a blanket for a picnic or simply sit back with a good book.
Recent Developments
The park's landfill history has presented some challenges in recent years. Settlement issues have unfortunately damaged some facilities, leading to the closure of tennis courts and the removal of certain amenities.
As of 2021, Huntington Beach has been conducting a geotechnical survey to evaluate the site and identify potential locations for new park features. Combined with community input, this effort aims to develop a revised master plan for rehabilitating Edison Community Park.
On the positive side, the park has seen some improvements, including those new pickleball courts, but you'll notice that conditions vary across different areas of the park. It's a work in progress with ongoing improvements planned despite the challenges.
