Tucked away at the corner of Parkcrest and Knoxville in Long Beach, California, Birdcage Park might be small in size (just 1-acre), but it delivers big on tranquility. This little green sanctuary provides a nice escape from daily life without having to venture far from home.

The park has a nice stretch of green space where you can spread out a blanket, lose yourself in a good book, or simply watch the clouds drift by. If you're visiting with kids, the children's play area is a definite highlight - designed with the little ones in mind but still entertaining enough for older children to enjoy.

Scattered within the grounds are several picnic tables that make for perfect lunch spots or casual family gatherings. One of our favorite things about this park is the abundance of shade trees that provide natural cooling on warm California days. Just a heads-up though - all that wonderful shade can sometimes leave the grass a bit damp, so you might want to bring a waterproof blanket if you're planning to sit on the ground.
