Scherer Park
About Scherer Park
A Piece of Long Beach History
Tucked between Long Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue sits Scherer Park, a sprawling 26.1-acre green space that's been a community fixture since 1944. Originally just 11.14 acres, the park was a gift from developer Lloyd Whaley and the Home Investment Company. Over time, it expanded to its current size, honoring Herman J. Scherer, who oversaw the city's parks from 1940 to 1948 as Superintendent.
Natural Beauty That Breathes
The park's lake is definitely a highlight, complete with an Atlantic Avenue overlook featuring a peaceful waterfall and cascade. If you're looking for a moment of calm in the urban landscape, you can enjoy the gentle sounds of flowing water here.
Bird watchers, grab your binoculars! The lake attracts an impressive variety of feathered residents - mallards paddle alongside Egyptian and Canadian geese, while American white pelicans add a touch of elegance to the scene. The diversity of duck species makes every visit a little different.
With generous green spaces and well-maintained walking trails, there's plenty of room to stretch your legs. If you're out for a morning jog or an afternoon wander, the paths wind through verdant surroundings that make you forget you're in the middle of a city.
Something for Everyone
At the heart of Scherer Park stands a community center with programs for locals of all ages throughout the year.
The park has plenty of active recreation options. You'll come across basketball courts, tennis courts, baseball fields, and volleyball courts scattered around the grounds. There's even outdoor fitness equipment for those who prefer their workouts with a side of fresh air.
Dog parents will appreciate the dedicated dog park area where four-legged friends can run free and socialize. For the little ones, there's a playground, but it's showing its age and could use some updates.
When hunger strikes, numerous picnic areas offer perfect spots to enjoy an outdoor meal. The open layout makes it easy to claim a space for family gatherings without feeling crowded.
Looking Forward
In recent years, the park has seen its share of improvements, including renovations to the community center and restrooms. Accessibility upgrades have made the space more welcoming to all visitors, reflecting the park's importance to the surrounding community.
For many Long Beach residents, Scherer Park isn't just a recreation spot - it's a place layered with memories. The same trees that provided shade for previous generations now watch over new families creating their own traditions in this enduring green space.
