Long Beach Greenbelt
About Long Beach Greenbelt
From Railway to Greenway
Tucked diagonally across Long Beach's urban grid lies a serene area with a fascinating history. The Long Beach Greenbelt has transformed what was once the Pacific Electric Railway route into a peaceful green corridor that slices through the city's neighborhoods. At 9.28 acres, this linear park isn't the biggest in town, but it offers something increasingly rare in urban environments - a genuine escape into nature without leaving the city limits.
Some sections of the park have been welcoming visitors since the winter of 2003-2004, with the development rolling out in phases over time. Along the way, Rotary Park was incorporated into the Greenbelt, adding another dimension to this community space.
Take a Stroll, Take a Breath
If you're looking for a place to clear your head or get your steps in, the Greenbelt's walking and riding trails provide an excellent setting. The paths meander gently through the park, accessible enough for a quick lunchtime walk or a more leisurely weekend exploration.
What makes this space special is the thoughtful landscaping featuring native plants throughout. These aren't just pretty to look at - they play an important role in supporting local wildlife and creating a more sustainable urban environment. It's a little piece of California's natural landscape right in the middle of the city.
Neighborhood Thread
More than just a park, the Greenbelt represents a green thread stitching together different Long Beach neighborhoods. It provides a natural breathing space amid the surrounding urban development - a place where you can momentarily forget you're in the middle of a bustling city.
While some portions of the old railway land have been developed for housing and other purposes over the years, the Greenbelt preserves a significant stretch as public open space. It's a living reminder that sometimes the best way forward is to reimagine rather than replace our past.
