About the Location
A Glimpse of North Long Beach History
Located in North Long Beach, Houghton Park covers 26.4 acres of green space that has been a part of the community since 1924. It all started with a heartfelt three-acre donation from the Houghton family, who dedicated the land in memory of Col. Sherman Otis Houghton and his wife Eliza Donner Houghton. Over the years, the City of Long Beach purchased additional land to grow the park into what we know today.
The Heart of Community Gatherings
At the center of park life stands the community complex named after former Long Beach Vice Mayor Doris Topsy-Elvord. Here you'll find a welcoming senior center, a vibrant teen center, and various spaces where community programs come to life. The community rooms are particularly comfortable and accessible for seniors, making them perfect spots for neighborhood meetings and gatherings.
Get Your Game On
Houghton Park offers a variety of athletic facilities. From baseball diamonds and a well-maintained soccer field to basketball courts and tennis courts, there's something for every athlete. Since 2004, skateboarders have claimed their own space at the park's skate park, which has become a local favorite.
Sunday league games regularly draw cheering crowds, bringing energy to the fields. The park has also organically evolved into a BMX hotspot, where cyclists gather for informal events with catchy names like "Free-for-all Fridays" and "Send it Sundays."
If running is more your speed, you'll appreciate the open areas that provide plenty of room to log those miles without feeling cramped.
A Neighborhood Green
For North Long Beach residents, this park provides green space where many neighborhood memories are formed. Kids can burn off energy at the playgrounds, while adults find peaceful corners for relaxation.
The family-friendly atmosphere makes it a popular gathering spot for local residents. History buffs might appreciate the palm trees planted by Stanley Houghton in the park's early days, living reminders of its rich past.
Looking Forward
Houghton Park has seen its share of improvements over the years, with renovations to baseball fields, playgrounds, and sports lighting funded by Los Angeles County Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond Acts.
As of 2025, more enhancements are in the works, with plans to update both the playground and community center. You should note that some facilities, particularly the restrooms and football court, could use a little extra TLC according to regular visitors.
Daily Life Essentials
The park offers practical amenities that make a day out more enjoyable, including community gardens, grilling areas, and picnic spots meant for family gatherings. Restrooms are available, however they sometimes need better maintenance.
You can enjoy the park well into the evening, with lights staying on until 10 PM - ideal for those summer night basketball games or evening strolls.
