Peace Park
About Peace Park
A Neighborhood Space
Tucked away at a corner in Long Beach, Peace Park is small in size but offers a pleasant green space for the local community. Opened in January 2004, this pocket-sized 0.4-acre green space has become a breath of fresh air for central Long Beach residents seeking a little nature in their urban landscape.
The park emerged from the city's push to create more open spaces where people could stretch their legs and feel a bit more connected to nature. As the only grassy park in the immediate area, it's become something of a neighborhood green.
Community Origins
Here's a heartwarming bit - the name "Peace Park" wasn't dreamed up in some city planning office. It came from fourth-grader Le'Niesha Johnson, who won an essay contest open to third and fourth-grade students at Roosevelt Elementary School just nearby. A panel of judges chose her entry, giving the park a name with genuine local roots.
Adding to the community feel, the Conservation Corps of Long Beach rolled up their sleeves to help build the park, making it truly a space created by and for the people who call this area home.
Features and Amenities
When the California sun is blazing, you'll appreciate the shaded area where you can cool off and take a breather. The open grassy area gives kids room to run around or provides a spot for a simple picnic on a nice day.
The entire park is fenced in, giving parents some peace of mind when bringing little ones along, and dog owners a secure place to enjoy time with their furry friends. If you're more of an evening person, don't worry - the park has lighting throughout so you can enjoy the space after sunset too.
Location and Access
You can find Peace Park at the intersection of 14th Street and Atlantic Avenue, offering a quiet reprieve from the busy city streets. It sits right next to the Sea Mist Senior Housing complex, giving older residents an easy opportunity to get some fresh air without traveling far.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 10PM, so whether you're an early bird or a night owl, there's time to enjoy this little oasis.
Development and Funding
Creating this green space wasn't just a matter of goodwill - it took about $90,000 and funding from several sources including the City's Mini Park fund, the Mayor's Mini-park Program, and Park Impact Fees. It reflects Long Beach's efforts to create natural spaces despite budget and land constraints.
Community Impact
Peace Park is a green anchor for the neighborhood, aligning with Long Beach's broader Open Space Plan to increase park acreage throughout the city. Beyond the planning documents though, it's simply a nice place where families gather, kids play, and anyone can find a moment of calm.
The park has a quiet, friendly atmosphere that makes it ideal for a quick escape from the surrounding urban bustle - showing that even small parks can be valuable additions to a neighborhood.
