About Rose Park

A Step Back in Time

Located at the intersection of 8th Street and Orizaba Avenue in Long Beach, Rose Park is a small circular space with a rich history. Gifted to the city by the Alamitos Land Company back in 1910, it stands as one of Long Beach's oldest green spaces, a little oasis of calm amid the urban landscape.

What You'll Find There

The park's simple layout features four pathways converging on a planted center area. There's something genuinely peaceful about sitting on one of the benches beneath the shade trees, taking a moment to just breathe and observe.

In 1955, the park got a romantic makeover with four walkways passing under arched rose trellises leading to a circular rose garden at its heart. The central gazebo, recently renovated, adds a touch of classic charm to this historic space.

A Unique Layout

Rose Park's distinctive circular design functions like a mini roundabout, with cars gently circling it as they navigate the neighborhood. Despite its modest size, this intimate park offers a nice spot for a quick break from daily life or a casual stroll.

Though compact, you can find surprisingly ample open grassy areas to enjoy. It has enough room to spread out a blanket or toss a ball, while maintaining a cozy, neighborhood atmosphere.

A Community's Labor of Love

The park fell into disrepair during the late 1960s and early 1970s, but local residents weren't willing to let their popular space fade away. In the mid-1970s, neighbors banded together to breathe new life into Rose Park.

The love continued with extensive renovations in 2008-2009, which brought a new gazebo, fresh cement work, entry trellises, comfortable benches, and beautifully themed climbing roses to enhance the park's identity.

The Heart of a Historic District

More than just a park, this circle of green is both namesake and centerpiece for the surrounding Rose Park historic neighborhood. The area encompasses over 500 buildings, primarily charming Craftsman bungalows constructed between 1910-1922.

The Rose Park district is known for its collection of eclectic older homes and local businesses, all just a short walk from the Pacific Ocean's refreshing breeze.

Where Neighbors Become Friends

Every so often, Rose Park transforms for community events where surrounding streets close to traffic. You'll see neighbors gathering with blankets and chairs, enjoying music, participating in games, and sharing food in this enchanting community space.

These gatherings bring residents together in this pleasant community space.
