Rosa Parks Park
About Rosa Parks Park
A Touch of Serenity
Tucked away at the corner of Alamitos Avenue and 15th Street in Long Beach, Rosa Parks Park offers a modest yet meaningful 0.74-acre haven from city life. Since opening on May 21, 2009, this compact green space functions as both a tribute to a civil rights hero and a peaceful spot for locals to catch their breath.
Art That Speaks
At the heart of the park stands the captivating "Roses for Rosa" installation by artist Pat Ward Williams. This thoughtful piece features an 8' x 5' perforated iron panel with vibrant color accents, portraying Rosa Parks nestled within the roots of a "Heritage Tree."
It's no coincidence that this artwork sits in the public bus plaza - a thoughtful nod to Parks' historic act of resistance on that Montgomery bus decades ago.
History Beneath Your Feet
As you wander the pathways, you'll notice something special underfoot. Twenty-six black granite tiles (16" x 16" each) are scattered along roughly 150 feet of walkway. These aren't just decorative - each is sandblasted with "Rosa" motifs and snippets about Parks' life, turning a simple stroll into an educational experience.
Community at Its Core
The park was funded by the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency, with a design that reflects the surrounding neighborhood. Councilmember Dee Andrews collaborated with Long Beach Transit to create a functional bus plaza featuring seven benches for nearby residents.
In a touching display of community spirit, each bench bears the name of a local religious organization that has committed to helping maintain this special space.
Natural Elements
The landscaping here isn't just decorative - it's purposeful. Native plants and water-conscious greenery contribute to the park's sustainability while adding natural beauty. A decorative raised planter adds to the space, and the "Tree of Equality" - a sturdy oak - commemorates the Long Beach Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and its president, Naomi Rainey.
