About Veterans Memorial Park
A Bit of Backstory
Once upon a time (well, 1972 to be exact), a little spot known as D Street Park got a makeover and a new name: Veterans Memorial Park. Thanks to some Housing and Urban Development funding, this sprawling 97-acre retreat with its gentle rolling hills and lush grassy areas became a breath of fresh air in Ontario.
What You'll Find There
Over the years, this park hasn't just sat around getting older - it's actually gotten better with age. A notable recent addition is a 2,200 square foot Ontario child and family resource community center with a healthy living theme. Perfect for when you've got the little ones in tow.
Speaking of kids, there are two new age-appropriate playgrounds that cater to different age groups. No more "this slide is too big" or "these swings are for babies" complaints - there's something just right for everyone. The playgrounds are kept in great shape, so you can relax while the kids burn off some energy.
If you want to exercise outdoors, the park's outdoor fitness center offers equipment that's accessible for all fitness levels. It's pretty satisfying to get your sweat on while enjoying the fresh air.
Things to Do
If basketball is your thing, you'll appreciate the well-maintained basketball courts where local players often gather for pickup games.
The park's walking trails meander through the grounds, making for a lovely stroll, jog, or even just a peaceful wander to clear your head. There's a particularly nice trail along Grove Avenue if you're looking for a pleasant route.
Planning a get-together? The picnic areas come equipped with tables, shaded benches, and grills - everything you need for a successful outdoor meal. They're scattered around the park, so you won't have to lug your cooler halfway across creation to find a spot.
Connected Green Spaces
One cool thing about Veterans Memorial Park is that it doesn't exist in isolation - it connects with both Galanis Park and John Galvin Park, creating one continuous green corridor through the community. It's like getting three parks for the price of one visit.
The thoughtful design means you can find space for whatever you're in the mood for - tossing a frisbee in an open field, shooting hoops, or just finding a quiet corner to read a book.
Honoring History
True to its name, this park is a tribute to those who've served in the United States Armed Forces. It's a place where the community remembers and honors their sacrifices. The park is also home to an Armenian Genocide Memorial, adding another layer of historical significance and providing a space for reflection.
Community Vibes
The park is often active with events throughout the year. You might find free Zumba classes or other fitness programs happening during your visit.
And if you're having one of those days where everything feels a bit too much, the park offers some pretty spectacular sunset views. There's something about watching the sky change colors over the trees that puts things in perspective.
