Recreation Facilities

McDonald Park offers a variety of sports options. You'll find a basketball court where local pickup games often get competitive, three pickleball courts (if you're looking to play Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and noon), a volleyball court for those spike-filled afternoons, and a two-sided handball court that sees plenty of action. Baseball fans haven't been forgotten either - there's a softball diamond just waiting for your home runs.

The park's generous open grass area acts as a versatile space where you can toss a frisbee, practice soccer drills, or simply sprawl out with a good book. A walking path circles this grassy heart, well-suited for getting those steps in without feeling like you're actually exercising.

Playground Area

Kids will enjoy the gated playground that caters to different age groups. Little ones have their own toddler-friendly structure, while the bigger setup keeps children up to about 11 years old thoroughly entertained. The playground features slides, swings, and monkey bars for children to enjoy.

Parents can breathe a little easier thanks to the playground's gated design - no sudden dashes toward the street! Just note that the swing area lacks shade during peak sun hours, so morning or late afternoon visits might be more comfortable during summer months.

Amenities

If you're planning to spend the day, McDonald Park has plenty of picnic tables and benches, many located under the shade of large trees. The pergola offers a charming covered space for gatherings, while additional covered table areas make ideal spots for birthday celebrations or family reunions.

You'll find clean, well-maintained restroom facilities within the park - always a relief when spending hours outdoors. Drinking fountains are also available, but bringing your own water bottle is never a bad idea on warmer days.

Layout and Reservations

The park is thoughtfully organized into distinct sections including Picnic Area East, Picnic Area South, and two picnic shelters that you can reserve for special events. Beach volleyball enthusiasts will appreciate the sand volleyball court for that authentic sandy-toes experience.

Street parking surrounds the park's perimeter, but spaces can become scarce during weekends or when events are happening. It might be worth carpooling if you're meeting friends here during peak times.

Community Atmosphere

McDonald Park has a pleasant neighborhood atmosphere where local families gather and different generations share the same space. On any given day, you might see grandparents watching little ones, teens shooting hoops, and young professionals unwinding after work.

History

Named after Judge Robert W. McDonald (1867-1918), this park has been part of Pasadena's fabric since at least the late 1930s. Historical photos show people enjoying its pergola during that era, connecting today's visitors to generations past.

This 4.8-acre park remains open 24 hours daily, but keep in mind that street parking is restricted after 9:00 pm.
