About the Location

Where Rivers Meet

Nestled at the meeting point of the American and Sacramento Rivers, Discovery Park unfolds across 302 acres of natural beauty in Sacramento, California. This urban retreat is the gateway to the American River Parkway, offering a refreshing escape from city life without having to leave town.

The riverfront views are genuinely spectacular, with the American and Sacramento Rivers creating a peaceful backdrop for your visit. If you're lucky, you might even spot sea lions playing in the waters - a delightful surprise for many first-time visitors!

Splash and Paddle

The park has one of Sacramento County's best boat launches, with a six-lane ramp and floating docks that make getting onto either river easy. If you're launching a boat, taking out a jet ski, or just hoping to catch dinner, you'll find good facilities here.

You can also take a refreshing dip in designated swimming areas when the weather heats up. Just keep in mind that these rivers come with strong currents and sometimes surprisingly cold temperatures - even on the hottest summer days.

Hit the Trail

Prefer to stay on solid ground? The park's network of trails offers perfect terrain for a casual stroll, morning jog, or serious bike ride. Discovery Park marks the beginning of the 32-mile Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail that stretches all the way to Folsom Lake - a favorite among Sacramento cyclists looking for distance and beautiful scenery.

The paths wind through diverse landscapes, making every walk or ride interesting whether you're going for a quick loop or an all-day adventure.

Wild Sacramento

The park's mix of open meadows, shady groves, and riverside beaches creates a surprisingly diverse ecosystem right in the city. This variety of habitats attracts local wildlife, making Discovery Park a prime spot for birdwatching and nature observation.

During Sacramento's famously hot summers, the park's mature trees provide blessed relief with their generous shade, making outdoor activities bearable even when temperatures climb.

Get Your Game On

Fancy something more active? The park doesn't disappoint with its volleyball courts and horseshoe pits available for friendly competition.

Archers can practice their skills at the dedicated archery range complete with target pads (just remember to bring your own paper targets). The range features a concrete walkway, making it accessible for wheelchair users.

Picnic Paradise

Discovery Park shines as a gathering place for groups of all sizes. Scattered throughout the grounds are numerous picnic areas equipped with tables and barbecue facilities, many tucked under the shade of beautiful trees.

The spacious layout means you'll never feel crowded, with plenty of room to spread out blankets, set up games, or just relax with friends and family away from other groups.

Festival Grounds

The grounds can accommodate up to 25,000 visitors for major events, making it a popular venue for the city's largest outdoor gatherings.

Rock fans flock here for the annual Aftershock Festival, while country music lovers mark their calendars for the Golden Sky Country Music Festival. The park's natural setting creates a unique atmosphere for these events that indoor venues simply can't match.

Good to Know

The park welcomes visitors year-round from 6AM to 8PM. You'll need to budget for the $7 parking fee (and additional fees if you're launching a boat). Note that alcohol isn't allowed unless you have a special event permit.

Restrooms are available within the park, with additional portable facilities appearing during busy periods and special events.
