About the Location
What You'll Find Here
Located between Sunset Cliffs and Nimitz Boulevard, Dusty Rhodes Park features a large grassy expanse that's suitable for many outdoor activities. The main attraction is the fully fenced off-leash dog park, which separates areas for both large and small dogs. Dogs have plenty of space to run around in these enclosures.
If you've got a smaller buddy (under 30 pounds), their section comes with some nice shade trees and plenty of benches where you can relax while keeping an eye on your furry friend. The large dog section gives more energetic pooches even more room to burn off energy. Both areas include water fountains designed for both canine and human use, and you can find waste bag dispensers throughout - so there's no excuse for not picking up!
Kids haven't been forgotten either - the park includes a playground with swings and slides where the little ones can climb and play. There's also a gazebo that works perfectly for birthday celebrations or small gatherings, conveniently located near the restrooms (always a plus when you're spending a few hours outdoors).
Location & Feel
Set in the Ocean Beach neighborhood, this park offers some shady spots thanks to scattered trees, but much of it basks in open sunshine - fantastic for those quintessential San Diego days. The layout naturally accommodates everything from impromptu picnics to casual frisbee games, and the nearby ocean ensures you'll often catch refreshing breezes while you're there.
Parking is surprisingly easy for a popular park, with dedicated lots that tend to have space even during busy weekend afternoons. You can reach it easily from major roads, and it's not far from freeway access if you're coming from further away.
Community Vibes
The park is popular with local residents. During the year, you'll come across everything from rugby matches to organized dog meetups happening here. The dog areas in particular have created something of a community of regulars who come to socialize (both humans and pets).
The city maintains the park well, but you should note that the dog park sections close for maintenance every Wednesday from 6am to 12pm. If you're exploring Ocean Beach, the park makes an easy addition to your itinerary given its proximity to other local attractions.
Outside the fenced dog areas, the open field gives you plenty of room for exercise or just lounging on a blanket with a good book. Just remember that if you brought your dog along, they'll need to stay leashed in these general areas.
