About the Location
A Downtown Oasis
Tucked just outside the outfield fence of Petco Park, Gallagher Square is a 2.8-acre breath of fresh air in downtown San Diego. This clever dual-purpose space is a public park when the stadium is quiet and transforms into an extension of the ballpark when the San Diego Padres are in action. Just a block from the waterfront, you're surrounded by San Diego's urban skyline while enjoying this unique green space.
Fresh New Look
In 2024, Gallagher Square emerged from a $20 million renovation celebrating Petco Park's 20th birthday. The transformation has provided baseball enthusiasts and locals with an upgraded space with improved functionality.
A notable feature is the artificial turf hills where you can relax and watch Padres games on the large video board at a more affordable price point. If you happen to visit during Friday night games, you're in for a visual treat as the square lights up with vibrant city connect colors - think pink, yellow, and lime green illuminating the night.
Fun for Everyone
Got kids? They'll love burning energy at the baseball-themed playground that perfectly fits the square's sporty vibe. Dog parents haven't been forgotten either - there's an off-leash dog park at 9th and J Street where your four-legged friends can run free and make some canine connections.
The square's design is wonderfully open, with plenty of spots to sit on those artificial hills - meant for relaxing with a book or simply people-watching when there's no event happening.
Beyond Baseball
When the Padres are away, Gallagher Square becomes a genuine public park - a green refuge in downtown's concrete landscape. The recent redesign allows parts of the park to remain accessible to the public more frequently.
Concert Central
Music lover? The square transforms into a concert venue centered around the Sycuan Stage, which can welcome up to 6,000 fans. There's something magical about attending shows here - the surrounding tall buildings create a natural amphitheater effect, and you can see the stage well from practically anywhere you stand.
Beyond baseball and music, this versatile space hosts everything from seasonal celebrations to the popular taco and tequila festival. It's become an integral part of what makes the East Village neighborhood so vibrant and lively year-round.
