About the Location

Scenic Location

Hilltop Park is situated atop Bayview Hill in San Francisco, California. The park occupies 3.5 acres at one of the highest points in the Bayview neighborhood, offering spectacular views of San Francisco Bay.

Iconic Sundial

Originally built in 1979, Hilltop Park underwent a significant renovation and reopened to the public in December 2016. The park's most iconic feature is a 70-foot tall sundial created by artist Jaques Overhoff, which serves as both a sculptural centerpiece and a functional timepiece.

Skateboarding Heritage

Hilltop Park holds historical significance as the site of San Francisco's first public skatepark. The original skate bowl, known as "the Dish," was a pioneering feature when it was constructed in 1980.

During the 2016 renovation, the skatepark was redesigned and rebuilt with input from the skateboarding community, including support from the Tony Hawk Foundation.

Sustainable Design

The park's design incorporates sustainability features, including native and drought-tolerant plantings, natural irrigation systems, and stormwater retention measures. The renovation process involved extensive community engagement, with local residents providing input on the park's features and design elements.

Community Space

Hilltop Park serves as a multi-generational community space, offering amenities for visitors of all ages. The redesigned park includes areas for active recreation, social gatherings, and quiet contemplation, all while preserving its signature panoramic views of the surrounding city and bay.
