About Hilltop Park

A View From Above

Perched atop Bayview Hill, Hilltop Park spreads across 3.5 acres at one of the highest points in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood. The park offers views of San Francisco Bay, Twin Peaks, and the Bay Bridge from one of the highest points in the neighborhood. It's less known for sunset watching than some other spots in the city, which means fewer crowds during golden hour.

The Giant Timekeeper

After significant renovations, Hilltop Park reopened in December 2016 with its most distinctive feature intact: a 70-foot tall sundial created by artist Jacques Overhoff. This isn't just a sculpture - it's a functioning timekeeper that doubles as an amphitheater where visitors can sit and find shelter on those famously windy San Francisco days.

Look closely at the cement surrounding the sundial and you'll discover thoughtful messages and artwork from local schoolchildren etched into the surface - a touching connection between visitors past and present.

Skaters' Paradise

Long before skateparks were common, Hilltop made history as San Francisco's first public skate spot. The original bowl, affectionately known as "the Dish," was groundbreaking when built in 1980.

During the 2016 renovation, skaters weren't forgotten. The park was redesigned with input from the skateboarding community and support from the Tony Hawk Foundation. Today's version maintains a relaxed vibe with good flow that keeps skaters of all levels coming back.

Kid-Friendly Fun

If you're bringing little ones, you'll appreciate the thoughtfully designed playground areas. Toddlers have their own dedicated space, keeping the youngest visitors safe while older kids can explore more challenging equipment. The slides, swings, and climbing structures offer plenty of options, with some especially fun concrete slides that tend to be a hit with children.

For family outings, there's a picnic area with tables and barbecue grills. There's even a fire pit for evening gatherings. The large circular grassy field at the center of the park provides ample space for spreading out blankets or playing impromptu games.

Green by Design

The park's modern layout incorporates smart environmental features, including native and drought-tolerant plantings that require minimal water. Natural irrigation systems and stormwater retention measures help maintain the landscape sustainably.

If you visit in spring, you're in for a treat - the native plants burst into bloom across the hillside, adding splashes of color to your panoramic views.

Layers of Experience

Hilltop Park feels larger than its acreage suggests thanks to its multi-level design that follows the natural contours of the hill. These different elevations enhance the views and create distinct spaces for various activities.

A paved path circles the main grassy area for those who prefer a gentle stroll, while fitness equipment stations along the way offer options for a more active visit. Clean restrooms are conveniently located near the skatepark on the east side, with the playground situated on the west side of the park.

For Everyone

What makes Hilltop special is how it is a true community space for all ages. You'll come across areas for active recreation, social gatherings, and quiet contemplation - all while enjoying those signature panoramic views of the city and bay.

Hilltop is less well-known than many other parks in San Francisco's system. It's typically less crowded than the city's more popular green spaces, giving it a more neighborhood feel.
