About the Location
A Lakeside Escape in the City
Situated in northwest Denver, Berkeley Lake Park sprawls across 83 acres of urban greenspace, with the 34-acre Berkeley Lake as its stunning centerpiece. There's something calming about standing at the water's edge, gazing across to the Rocky Mountains that frame the horizon in dramatic fashion.
The lake is ringed by a paved mile-long trail excellent for a casual stroll, morning jog, or leisurely bike ride. The views change with every step as you make your way around the water.
Get Moving or Just Relax
If you're the active type, Berkeley Lake offers plenty of ways to enjoy the water. Grab your fishing gear and try your luck - the lake is regularly stocked, and locals regularly reel in bluegill, crappie, and bass. Or if you prefer, bring a kayak or canoe for a peaceful paddle (just remember, motorized boats aren't allowed here).
The park strikes that perfect balance between open sunny meadows and areas shaded by mature trees. If you're looking to spread out a blanket in the sunshine or escape the summer heat under leafy canopies, you'll find your perfect spot. The picnic areas scattered throughout make it easy to turn a few hours into a full day of outdoor enjoyment.

Sports for Everyone
Beyond the natural beauty, Berkeley Lake Park doesn't skimp on recreational facilities. The tennis courts come with lighting for those evening matches, while basketball courts and multi-use fields cater to various sports enthusiasts.
The park connects to the Scheitler Recreation Center, which features a swimming pool that's a neighborhood favorite during hot summer months.
Families will appreciate the well-maintained playground areas with equipment suitable for different age groups. It's the kind of place where kids can burn off energy while parents take a well-deserved breather at nearby picnic tables.
A Haven for Dog Lovers
If you've got a four-legged friend, there's a spacious, fenced off-leash dog park with a gravel surface where dogs can socialize and play freely. Throughout the rest of the park, dogs are welcome too - just keep them leashed outside the designated off-leash area.
Nature in the City
The lake creates a mini ecosystem that attracts surprising wildlife for an urban setting. Keep your eyes peeled for red-winged blackbirds calling from the cattails, various duck species paddling across the water, and if you're lucky, you might even spot a fox slipping through the underbrush. The patches of cattails and bulrushes around the lake create little pockets of wilderness that make you forget you're in the middle of a city.

Unique Perspectives
One of the park's tranquil spaces is the view of the historic Lakeside Amusement Park across the water. From certain vantage points, especially near Tennyson Street, you can catch glimpses of this nostalgic landmark that adds a touch of whimsy to the landscape.
Deep Roots
Established back in 1906, Berkeley Lake Park has been a Denver staple for over a century. In the 1960s, the construction of Interstate 70 split the northern section away from what's now the Willis Case Golf Course. The park isn't just locally significant - it's part of the Denver Park and Parkway System, which earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
Practical Details
The William H. Smiley Branch of the Denver Public Library sits within the park boundaries, adding a literary dimension to your outdoor adventure. Restrooms are available seasonally during warmer months, with portable toilets filling in when the permanent facilities are closed.
Parking is plentiful around the perimeter, making it easy to visit even during peak times. Even during busy weekend afternoons, the park generally maintains a peaceful, spacious atmosphere.
