About the Location
A Hilltop Haven
Perched on what was once the highest point in Pueblo, Mitchell Park's 6.56 acres offer recreation along with a breath of fresh air and nice views of the surrounding area.
Next to E. 12th St., this park is a godsend for nearby residents, especially since green spaces aren't exactly abundant on Pueblo's East Side. It's a valuable green space in an area where they're relatively scarce.
Make a Splash
Let's talk about the Mitchell Park Pool - a 25-meter swimming spot that's perfect whether you're trying to knock out some serious laps or just cooling off on a scorching Colorado day. If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, the diving boards are waiting for your best cannonball impression.
Kids (and honestly, plenty of adults too) go crazy for the splash pads and tube slides. Just note that the aquatic fun is seasonal - this isn't a year-round plunge kind of place.
There's also a historic bathhouse from the WPA era standing watch over the pool area. It's a cool architectural throwback that connects the park to Pueblo's past while you're busy making new memories.
Beyond the Water
Dry land has plenty to offer too. The playground keeps the little ones entertained, while the basketball courts attract everything from casual shooters to neighborhood pickup games.
Scattered throughout are green spaces well-suited for spreading out a blanket and having an impromptu picnic. Thankfully, the numerous trees provide much-needed shade when the Colorado sun decides to show off. The walking paths winding through the park make for a pleasant stroll, and dog owners tend to favor the left side of the park for walking their four-legged friends.
Community at Heart
Mitchell Park isn't just somewhere to play - it's where the community comes together. Throughout the year, you can find special themed events bringing neighbors face-to-face.
One of the most striking features is the historic mural that stretches across the park. Created by local artists with help from city children and volunteers, it tells the story of how Pueblo's East Side came to be. It's not just beautiful; it's a colorful history lesson that connects everyone who visits with the area's rich past.
The Practical Stuff
Recently repainted benches dot the landscape, giving you plenty of spots to sit and take it all in. There are restrooms available too, but they're seasonal, typically only open during warmer months alongside the pool.
Though not the largest of Pueblo's parks, Mitchell Park is well-regarded by locals. For East Side residents especially, it functions as both a neighborhood park and a community meeting place.
