Where Hartford Meets the River

A grassy terrace stage that seats up to 2,500 people sits at the water's edge of Mortensen Riverfront Plaza, making it one of Hartford's more ambitious urban gathering spots. The plaza stretches over Interstate 91, reconnecting downtown Hartford with the Connecticut River that had long been separated from the city, and serves as the centerpiece of Hartford's Riverfront Recapture park system.

At the water's edge, you can catch performances during the Summer Music Festival, enjoy music at the Hartbeat Music Festival, or experience the Riverfront Dragon Boat & Asian Festival.

From Forgotten to Flourishing

The plaza has an interesting transformation story. What was once an overgrown, forgotten area - walled off by flood dikes and isolated by Interstate 91 - is now a public space where Hartford residents can connect with the river.

Take a moment to appreciate the stunning views of the Connecticut River flowing past and the Hartford skyline rising in the background. Its location near the CT Science Museum makes it an easy addition to a day of exploration in the city.

A Place for Everyone

Mortensen Riverfront Plaza is a popular gathering point, connected to other parks in the Riverfront Recapture system by riverwalks. If you're spreading out a picnic blanket, taking a lunchtime stroll, fitting in your daily run, or just sitting quietly with nature in the midst of the city, the plaza accommodates all.

A pedestrian bridge spans the river, linking Hartford to East Hartford and providing access to Great River Park on the eastern shore - fantastic for extending your riverside adventure.

History Comes Alive

As you wander through the plaza, you might notice several thought-provoking sculptures that form part of the Lincoln Sculpture Walk. These pieces are among a collection of 16 artworks scattered along the riverfront that explore Lincoln and various aspects of the history surrounding his era, adding layers of meaning to your visit.
