About the Location

A Pup's Paradise

Squirrel Ridge Park has become a go-to spot for Gainesville dog owners, and it's easy to see why. The park has separate fenced areas for small and large dogs, so your tiny Yorkie won't have to dodge Great Danes during playtime. The large dog area even includes a training section where you can work on those commands your stubborn friend pretends not to understand.

The park includes several useful amenities. There's dog agility equipment for the more athletic pups and a doggie wash station so your muddy buddy doesn't destroy your car on the way home. Multiple water stations are scattered throughout, keeping four-legged visitors hydrated during Florida's warmer days. On particularly hot afternoons, the plastic pools become doggie magnets, offering a refreshing splash zone. And yes, there are plenty of tennis balls around if you forgot to bring one.

The dog park is quite spacious - plenty of room for zoomies without feeling overcrowded.

Fresh Additions

Following 2021 renovations, Squirrel Ridge has evolved into not only a dog haven. Kids now have their own fun zone with a modern playground featuring slides, swings (including a tandem parent-child swing), and roller rockers. Parts of the playground are wheelchair accessible, making fun available to more young visitors.

The newly added ADA-compliant walking paths have made the park much more accessible for everyone. These smooth, well-maintained trails wind through the property, excellent for a casual stroll or a brisk walk if you're looking to get some steps in.

Beyond the Bark

While the dogs might be the stars here, Squirrel Ridge offers plenty for humans too. You can find two shelters with covered picnic tables that make great spots for family gatherings, plus built-in charcoal grills for impromptu cookouts. Just a heads-up: there are no permanent restroom facilities, so plan accordingly if you're settling in for the day.

Sports enthusiasts might be surprised to discover the retention field where rugby games are played - it's actually the only county park in the area that accommodates this sport. There's also a sprawling open field ideal for soccer, football, frisbee, and kickball games.

For those who don't want to skip workout day, outdoor fitness equipment is conveniently located near the playground, letting parents squeeze in some exercise while keeping an eye on the little ones.

Comfort and Space

The thoughtful layout includes shaded areas with benches where you can catch your breath while watching the furry action unfold. Massive trees provide welcome relief from the Florida sun and add natural beauty to the landscape.

Around the park, you'll come across seating benches positioned along the walking trails, but regular visitors sometimes mention that the dog park section could use a few more places to sit.

A Touch of History

Take a moment during your visit to check out the historic marker near the entrance. This modern park sits on what was once part of the Seranola Plantation, which stretched all the way to I-75 and Paynes Prairie. It's a small but interesting connection to the area's past that adds a bit of depth to your park experience.
