About the Location
From Landfill to Local Treasure
Positioned in southeast Jacksonville, Florida, Brackridge Park sits near the intersection of Hogan Road and Southside Boulevard. Unless you're a local, you might just drive past this hidden 10.7-acre space without noticing it. What's fascinating is that this community space, established in 1974, was once a soil borrow pit and sanitary landfill before being transformed into the recreational area it is today.
Soccer Central
The heart of Brackridge Park is undoubtedly its natural grass soccer fields, which replaced the original baseball diamonds and tennis courts back in 1992 when soccer fever started taking hold. In an age where artificial turf is becoming the norm, there's something refreshingly old-school about playing on real grass here.
The Jacksonville Jaguars Soccer Club (around since 1979) now manages much of the complex through a partnership with the city. Fair warning: after a good rain, the fields can get pretty rough, and you'll notice signs of heavy use throughout the year. But that's the mark of a well-loved community space, right?
Play Time
If you're bringing kids along, the playground here is primarily designed for elementary school-aged children. What makes it stand out is the surprisingly tall play structure and some genuinely fun equipment. Kids seem to especially love the musical modules, spinning structures, swings, and seesaw that offer a break from the typical playground fare.
You'll discover parts of the playground are nicely shaded, but during those hot Florida summer days, some areas can still feel like you're standing on the surface of the sun. The equipment is generally clean and well-kept, though don't be surprised if you occasionally find sections closed off for maintenance.
The Basics
As for amenities, Brackridge keeps it simple but functional. There's a modest parking lot that tends to fill up quickly during soccer events, so you might want to arrive early. Public restrooms are available, but they're not always in pristine condition.
A covered pavilion offers shelter from sudden Florida downpours and houses a few picnic tables for those wanting to enjoy a packed lunch. There's also a water fountain to keep you hydrated and a concession stand that springs to life during soccer events.
Getting Around
The parking area and pavilion are wheelchair accessible, making the park usable for visitors with mobility challenges. The BASL soccer league frequently holds games and practices here, sometimes stretching into the evening hours under the lights.
Despite being on the smaller side and showing some wear and tear, Brackridge Park is valued by both serious soccer players and families looking for a place where kids can climb, swing, and burn off energy on somewhat unique playground equipment.
