About the Location
A Vast Urban Retreat
Found in Jacksonville's Mandarin neighborhood, Losco Regional Park spreads across a generous 210 acres of green space - a wonderful escape from city life without actually leaving the city. The park was established in the late 1990s when Jacksonville acquired four adjacent land parcels using a $3.8 million Florida Communities Trust grant.
You can find this sprawling park nestled at the crossroads of Jacksonville's beltway system, just west of Interstate 95 on I-295's north side. The natural landscape features a mix of mature trees, open fields, and winding trails that create a peaceful atmosphere away from urban hustle. The magnificent live oak trees across the park create a stunning natural canopy that provides welcome shade on sunny Florida days.
Trails and Accessibility
The park's extensive walking and hiking trails meander through various terrains, suitable for both casual strolls and more dedicated hikes. Three distinct nature trails intertwine around the park, offering about 3 miles of hiking options altogether. The trails are well-maintained and clearly marked, but do watch your step for tree roots along some paths.
Losco is designed to be accessible for everyone. The paved walkways around the park and pond accommodate wheelchairs, making outdoor enjoyment possible for visitors with mobility challenges. These paths are popular for walking, jogging, and biking, with helpful distance markers for those keeping track of their exercise goals.
Sports and Recreation
The park offers several options for sports enthusiasts. The park maintains several fields for soccer and other team sports that are kept in excellent condition. There's a turf field with lights and bleachers for evening games, plus multiple multipurpose fields with superior drainage that hold up well even after Florida's famous downpours.
Playground and Splash Pad
Kids have plenty of space to burn energy at the modern playground equipment that's thoughtfully divided by age groups. Older children (ages 5-12) can tackle the large climbing structure with its impressive 20-foot slide, while the little ones (ages 2-5) have their own separate play equipment. The swings cater to everyone - baby swings, regular swings, and even a saucer-type swing that fits multiple children at once.
On hot summer days between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the splash pad becomes the park's most popular spot. It's a simple pleasure that brings huge smiles to little faces, and parents appreciate the shaded seating areas nearby. Just remember to bring water shoes - that cement surface can get pretty slippery when wet!
Picnic and Gathering Areas
You can use the numerous picnic areas featuring tables and a large pavilion that's available to reserve for events. These spots are perfectly positioned near the main amenities and offer plenty of shade - a must during those sunny Florida afternoons. There are several grills scattered within the park too, making it easy to cook up something delicious for your family gathering or birthday celebration.
Natural Environment
Beyond recreation, Losco acts as home to diverse Florida wildlife. The park's retention pond attracts ducks and turtles, offering a little nature-watching opportunity during your visit. Just note that alligators do occasionally make an appearance in the water, so keep a safe distance from the pond's edge.
Dog-Friendly Environment
Your four-legged friends are welcome at this dog-friendly park, where many visitors bring their pets to enjoy the walking paths and open spaces. Dogs need to stay on leash at all times, but they'll appreciate the thoughtful touch of a built-in dog water bowl at one of the water fountains. Remember to clean up after your pup to keep the park pleasant for everyone who visits.
