About the Location
Natural Environment
Found in Port St. Lucie, Florida, McCarty Ranch Preserve spans a generous 3,107 acres of natural beauty. What's fascinating is its evolution - once a bustling cattle ranch and farm, the land was acquired by the City of Port St. Lucie in 2012 and officially became part of the city the following year.
The preserve showcases classic Florida pinelands alongside an impressive system of lakes covering more than 300 acres, remnants of previous mining operations. This tranquil spot provides a natural retreat just beyond the city limits.
Environmental Purpose
McCarty Ranch isn't just pretty to look at - it's working hard behind the scenes too. While it is a peaceful recreational retreat, the preserve plays a crucial role as a water storage and treatment facility for Port St. Lucie, helping ensure the community's water needs are met for generations to come.
This practical function never overshadows the preserve's commitment to protecting its natural landscapes and providing sanctuary for local wildlife.
Recreational Activities
The preserve offers plenty of ways to enjoy the great outdoors. Well-maintained trails wind through the property, meant for walking, biking, or horseback riding adventures.
Water enthusiasts will appreciate the extensive lake system, ideal for peaceful fishing, canoeing, and kayaking excursions. The lakes are popular with fishing enthusiasts who appreciate the quiet atmosphere.
The preserve also features an 18-hole disc golf course for visitors to enjoy.
Camping Options
Want to extend your stay under the stars? McCarty Ranch offers both tent and RV camping options. Choose from 13 primitive tent sites or 6 RV sites positioned around one of the serene lakes.
Keep in mind there are time limits - tent campers can stay up to 14 nights while RV visitors are welcome for up to 30 days. Though the setting is rustic, you won't have to rough it completely. The campground provides modern comforts including restrooms with showers and free Wi-Fi - a nice balance of wilderness and convenience.
