About the Location

Location and Design

Located along the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park covers 8 acres in the downtown area. Opened in 2010 as part of Tampa's Riverwalk project, this park transformed what was previously an underused space.

The layout features a large open lawn that slopes toward the river in wide terraces, creating a natural amphitheater effect. From here, you can catch stunning views of the University of Tampa's Plant Hall across the water. Situated in what locals call the Waterfront Arts District, the park seamlessly blends nature with Tampa's cultural heartbeat.

Park Amenities

If you're bringing little ones, there's a decent playground that's particularly good for younger children. It's showing a bit of wear and could definitely use more shade (this is Florida, after all), but the padded ground surface keeps knees and elbows safe from hard falls.

On hot days - and let's face it, Tampa has plenty - the interactive splash fountain becomes the park's star attraction. Kids gleefully dash through water jets while parents appreciate the free cool-down option. Dog owners, your furry friends are welcome too, just keep them leashed.

There are public restrooms near the playground, however be prepared for possible lines during busy events - they're not exactly abundant.

Surrounding Attractions

The park enjoys some impressive neighbors. To the north, you'll discover the Tampa Museum of Art and the Glazer Children's Museum, while the distinctive Rivergate Tower stands to the south. Ashley Drive borders the eastern edge.

The western side connects to the Tampa Riverwalk, a 2.4-mile pathway that hugs the downtown waterfront. The extended walkway is meant for strolling, jogging, or biking from the Convention Center all the way to Armature Works. History buffs will appreciate the busts of notable Tampa figures dotted along the waterfront.

Events and Activities

Curtis Hixon truly shines as Tampa's community gathering spot, hosting everything from concerts and music festivals to food events and craft shows year-round.

Come winter, part of the park transforms into the magical Winter Village, complete with an outdoor ice skating rink (yes, in Florida!), holiday shops, and seasonal treats. For the fitness-minded, regular yoga, Zumba, and stretching classes take advantage of the open green space.

Hungry? Food trucks frequently set up during events, saving you from having to venture far for a bite. And if you're in the mood for a different perspective, hop on the water taxi for a scenic tour of the waterfront area.

Sustainability Features

Beneath its beautiful surface, the park incorporates thoughtful eco-friendly elements. The grounds are kept green using reclaimed water for irrigation, while LED lighting throughout reduces energy consumption. There's even a sophisticated hydrodynamic treatment system that cleans stormwater before it flows into the Hillsborough River - keeping Tampa's waterways healthier for everyone to enjoy.
