About the Location
Location and Design
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is an 8-acre public park located along the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa, Florida. The park opened in its current configuration in 2010 as part of Tampa's Riverwalk project, replacing an older, less-utilized park space.
The park features a large open lawn that slopes gently towards the river in a series of wide terraces. This central greenspace is surrounded by various amenities and attractions. The park offers views of the University of Tampa's Plant Hall across the river and is situated in an area known as the Waterfront Arts District.
Surrounding Attractions
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is bordered by the Tampa Museum of Art and the Glazer Children's Museum to the north, Ashley Drive to the east, and the Rivergate Tower to the south. On the western side, the park connects to the Tampa Riverwalk, a 2.4-mile-long walkway along the downtown waterfront.
Events and Activities
The park serves as a central gathering place for Tampa residents and visitors, hosting a variety of events throughout the year. These include concerts, music festivals, food festivals, arts and crafts shows, and other community activities.
In winter, a portion of the park is transformed into the Winter Village, featuring an outdoor ice skating rink and holiday-themed attractions.
Sustainability Features
Sustainability features are incorporated into the park's design, including the use of reclaimed water for irrigation and LED lighting to reduce energy consumption. The park also includes a hydrodynamic treatment system that cleans stormwater before it enters the Hillsborough River.
