Franklin Park
About Franklin Park
Park Origin & Location
Nestled in the Central Bench area of Boise, Franklin Park spans a cozy 3.04 acres near the intersection of Franklin Road and Orchard Street. You'll come across this local park on Hilton Street, occupying the grounds where Franklin Elementary School once stood before its demolition in 2009.
Since the City of Boise acquired the land in 2013, the park has gradually evolved through phased development into a neighborhood recreational space.
Walking & Open Spaces
One of the park's simple pleasures is its 0.25 mile paved walking path that meanders within the grounds. This smooth, accessible trail creates a great loop around the park's perimeter - ideal for morning jogs, afternoon strolls, or simply getting in your daily steps.
Need some room to spread out? The park features generous open grassy areas, including a soccer field sized grass area with well-maintained turf that's meant for frisbee, casual sports, or just lounging with a good book. While there are some mature shade trees offering respite from the sun, most of the trees are still young and growing - meaning this park will only get more beautiful with time.
Playground & Features
The playground at Franklin Park features a modern design with equipment suitable for ages 2-12. The bonded rubber surface is not only safer for tumbles but also makes the playground accessible for visitors using mobility devices.
The main attraction of the playground is the giant slide - a large metal slide that descends from a structure about 20 feet high. Getting to the top requires conquering a triangular rope web, making this attraction better suited for older or more adventurous children (typically ages 7+).
Smaller explorers haven't been forgotten - there's a dedicated toddler playground installation, although be warned: many little ones get starry-eyed looking at the "big kid" equipment.
The playground also features a centrifugal force powered spinning apparatus and other unique play structures that feel almost futuristic. The modern design encourages kids to climb, balance, and move in different ways than more traditional playgrounds.
Fitness & Recreation Areas
The park has an outdoor gym area for visitors 13 and up. This fitness zone includes equipment for various muscle groups, with particularly solid options for upper body workouts including pull-up bars, dip bars, and a ladder that even seasoned fitness enthusiasts will appreciate.
Fancy something a bit more leisurely? Try your hand at the bocce courts, available on a first-come, first-served basis. This traditional lawn bowling game is easy to learn but offers hours of competitive fun.
Amenities & Facilities
When it's time to refuel or relax, head to one of the two covered pavilions near the playground. These shaded spots with picnic tables provide an excellent setting for family lunches or small gatherings.
During Boise's warm summer months, the park's mister poles are a welcome relief. Just press the buttons on the mister towers to activate a cooling spray that makes hot days much more bearable.
Both you and your four-legged friends can stay hydrated thanks to the park's drinking fountain with an attached dog bowl. Just remember that dogs are only allowed on the sidewalks, not in the play areas.
Gone are the days of portable toilets - the park now features permanent restroom facilities. Do note that these restrooms typically close during the winter months, so plan accordingly during the colder season.
Safety Information
For your safety, please stay away from any fenced or closed areas within the park.
While the playground equipment offers exciting challenges, the large slide and climbing structures can be quite demanding for smaller children. If you're bringing younger kids, keep a close eye on them as they navigate these more advanced play features.
