Helen B. Lowder Park
About Helen B. Lowder Park
A Bit of History
Found in Southeast Boise, Helen B. Lowder Park spans a cozy 5 acres right next to Liberty Elementary School. This nearby retreat wasn't always known by its current name - it started life as Centennial Park until 2003, when it was rededicated to honor Helen B. Lowder, who once served as president of the Boise Parks and Recreation Commission.
What You Can Do Here
Whether you're looking to burn some energy or just enjoy a lazy afternoon, this park offers plenty of options. The open grassy areas are ideal for throwing a frisbee, having a picnic, or practicing your soccer moves.
If you're into sports, you'll appreciate the basketball courts and the multi-use tennis courts that also welcome pickleball players - great for everything from casual rallies to more competitive matches.
Got kids? The playground area is a hit with the younger crowd, featuring unique equipment and some welcome shade for those hot Idaho days. It accommodates children of different ages, making it suitable for siblings to play together even if they're years apart.
There's also a sand volleyball court if you're feeling like a beach day without the beach. Just a heads-up though - the sand isn't quite resort quality and contains some pebbles, so maybe leave your good volleyball at home.
The Practical Stuff
When hunger strikes, head to one of the covered picnic tables scattered across the park. These shaded spots work well for family meals or neighborhood get-togethers.
You can find public restrooms available during the warmer months (they close up for winter, so plan accordingly). The park's well-maintained sidewalks make for pleasant strolls whether you're getting your steps in or just enjoying some fresh air.
The shade trees provide welcome relief during Boise's summer heat - perfect spots to sit under with a good book or podcast. And no need to circle the block looking for a spot - there's plenty of off-street parking available.
The Heart of the Neighborhood
Helen B. Lowder Park is clean, peaceful, and well-maintained - a pleasant green space in the neighborhood.
The atmosphere is family-friendly, with neighbors often gathering to chat while their kids play. Dog owners often bring their four-legged friends for some socialization too, making it an informal meeting spot for the neighborhood's pet lovers.
With Liberty Elementary School right next door, it's especially convenient for families with school-aged children. And if you're looking for more space to roam, the school grounds offer additional open areas and a small running track to explore.
