Cecil D. Andrus Park
About Cecil D. Andrus Park
Location and Purpose
Found in the heart of downtown Boise, Cecil D. Andrus Park spans a modest 2 acres directly across Jefferson Street from the State Capitol. This pocket-sized green space is a common meeting point for downtown workers, residents, and Capitol visitors looking for a moment of respite from the urban hustle.
The park offers excellent views of the State Capitol building - if you're looking to photograph Boise's most iconic structure, this is a great vantage point. Plus, its central location means you're just steps away from downtown parking and amenities.
Park Features
Charming brick walkways meander throughout the space, making it easy to stroll through or cut across on your downtown adventures. The mature shade trees provide welcome relief during Idaho's sunny days, creating cool spots to relax or enjoy a quick outdoor break.
Seasonal flowers add splashes of color among the greenery, bringing a touch of natural beauty to the concrete surroundings. You can find several picnic tables scattered throughout - well-suited for enjoying a takeout lunch or coffee from a nearby café.
And yes, your four-legged friends are welcome here too, making it a convenient stop during downtown dog walks.
The "Let Freedom Ring" Project
In 2007, the Golden Garden Club of Boise took on a significant beautification project called "Let Freedom Ring" to give the park a much-needed refresh. This $63,500 transformation created a central plaza honoring those who serve in military or public service roles.
The renovation widened the existing asphalt walkway and expanded the central area into a 20-foot diameter plaza. Thoughtful additions like sandstone blocks and new benches created more seating options around the plaza's perimeter.
Dedication and Heritage
The park received its current name in 2018 to honor Cecil D. Andrus, a popular four-term Idaho Governor and U.S. Secretary of the Interior known for his significant conservation work and dedication to public service.
A bronze bust of Andrus stands in the park commemorating his legacy. The space is kept notably clean and peaceful, reflecting the dignity of its namesake, who many remember as one of Idaho's most respected moderate governors.
Community Events
Despite its small size, this park hosts some of Boise's biggest community gatherings. On New Year's Eve, it transforms for the annual Idaho Potato Drop, complete with live music, performances, and food vendors (yes, they actually drop a giant potato to ring in the New Year - very Idaho).
Year-round, the park welcomes diverse celebrations including the Boise Pride Festival, Latino Fest, the exciting Twilight Criterium cycling races, and functions as the starting line for the Fit One half marathon. During the holiday season, Christmas festivities bring parades and tree lighting ceremonies to the space.
Its location facing the Capitol makes it a natural gathering spot for civic events, from Veterans Day ceremonies to community rallies and demonstrations of all kinds.
