Kathryn Albertson Park
About Kathryn Albertson Park
A Generous Gift
Tucked away near downtown Boise, Kathryn Albertson Park spreads across 41 acres of natural beauty. This special use park came to life in 1989, thanks to the generosity of Joe and Kathryn Albertson who gifted it to the city.
Natural Design
Imagine stepping into a peaceful sanctuary designed specifically for wildlife watching and quiet reflection. Wide, paved paths wind through natural landscapes, inviting you to slow down and notice the details around you.
The park's design is beautifully balanced with three main features of roughly equal size: lush vegetation, serene ponds, and open spaces. More than 400 trees and 2,000 shrubs have found their home here, alongside diverse flowers and grasses that provide food and shelter for the park's wild residents.
Water Features
As you wander through the park, you'll come across several thoughtfully designed ponds. These shallow water bodies warm quickly in spring, creating perfect conditions for aquatic insects and plants to thrive, which in turn feed the many waterfowl and shorebirds that visit.
Little islands dot the ponds, giving birds places to rest, roost, and nest. In warmer months, you might catch turtles sunbathing on rocks while water lilies spread their blooms across the water's surface.
Wildlife Viewing
This urban wildlife space provides excellent nature-watching opportunities in Boise. Early mornings or evenings are prime time to spot wildlife going about their day. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, various birds, turtles, frogs, and if you're lucky, maybe even a mink.
Birdwatchers will feel especially at home here, with local and migratory species fluttering about. The park's diverse ecosystem also supports butterflies, dragonflies, and other helpful insects, particularly in the pollinator fields.
Gathering Spaces
There's something special about the two gazebos nestled within the park. The Rookery, one of these charming structures, features a red tile roof with a bit of history - it once topped Albertsons' very first supermarket.
The Eyrie, the other gazebo, offers a picturesque view overlooking a pond with a rock water fountain. Both spaces can be reserved for weddings and special events, making them perfect spots for intimate gatherings surrounded by nature.
Photography
Kathryn Albertson Park is a popular photography location in Boise. Each season brings its own magic - from spring blossoms to the spectacular display of autumn colors. The mix of natural elements, quaint bridges, and tranquil waterways creates gorgeous backdrops for engagement photos, wedding portraits, or family pictures.
Visitor Guidelines
To help preserve this natural haven, you should observe wildlife from a distance rather than approaching them. Note that biking, fishing, boating, swimming, and wading aren't allowed in the park.
Dogs are welcome but must stay on leash at all times. Please stick to the designated paths to help protect the natural habitat. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 8PM.
Local Significance
Kathryn Albertson Park is part of Boise's "Ribbon of Jewels," a collection of riverside parks named after notable local women. Its peaceful atmosphere provides a quiet break from city life while remaining close to downtown Boise.
