Veterans Memorial Park
About Veterans Memorial Park
History
Nestled along the Boise River, Veterans Memorial Park spans 38 acres of urban greenspace in Boise, Idaho. Established in 1976, the park stands on what was once the Idaho Soldiers Home that operated for over 70 years from 1895 to 1966.
The park has a dual purpose - it's both a place to honor those who served and a peaceful retreat for anyone looking to escape the city buzz. The land that once housed veterans now commemorates their service while giving Boise residents a glimpse of tranquility.
Memorials
The park features several tributes to veterans. In 2016, a Vietnam Veterans Memorial was installed, taking inspiration from the iconic memorial in Washington D.C.
Carved in India Black Granite (the same material used for the Vietnam Wall in D.C.), the memorial honors 217 Idaho veterans who lost their lives in the Vietnam War between 1961 and 1975. Their names stand as a permanent reminder of their sacrifice.
You'll also find a thoughtfully designed Patriot Walk - a brick pathway connecting the parking area to the Veterans Memorial Plaza. These spaces create a serene environment for reflection, remembrance, and respect.
Recreational Features
Beyond its memorial aspects, the park offers plenty for those seeking recreation. Kids will enjoy the modern playground with equipment designed for both little ones (ages 2-5) and older children (ages 5-12).
The park provides direct access to the Boise River Greenbelt - a tree-lined pathway for walking, jogging, or biking along the river. Many locals use the park as their launching point for Greenbelt adventures.
The expansive grassy areas provide plenty of space for frisbee, picnics, or simply lounging with a book. During summer months, the riverside location offers spots to cool off in the water. There's even a small island in the river that adds a touch of adventure to your visit.
Natural Features
The wooded trails wind through varying natural environments throughout the park. Scattered throughout are small ponds and fishing spots where you can try your luck either in still water or along the Boise River.
Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse wildlife - mink scurrying along the banks, various birds flitting through the trees, fish in the waters, and if you're lucky, perhaps a deer wandering through. Don't miss Cooper's Giant Hollow Tree, a natural landmark that never fails to impress visitors.
The shaded wooded areas are a blessing during hot Idaho summers, creating a natural oasis within city limits. These trails also provide a reliable option when winter conditions make the foothills too muddy for comfortable hiking.
Facilities
You'll discover clean, year-round restrooms within the park. For gatherings, take your pick from numerous picnic tables, an open picnic area, or reserve the covered shelter for special events.
The parking area offers shady spots - a thoughtful detail that makes all-day visits more comfortable. And if you get hungry, the park's proximity to The Boardwalk means food options are just a short walk away.
Open daily from 7AM to 9PM, Veterans Memorial Park honors those who served while offering a quieter alternative to the busier downtown parks. Its riverside location and proximity to downtown Boise make it accessible yet relatively uncrowded.
